Pet Travel & Lifestyle Expert

Kelly Merritt’s first dog was a Basset Hound named “Sweet Pea” and ever since, she has been hypnotized by hound dogs. Today she is the proud parent of a coon hound named "Dash" who never ceases to amaze and control her.

A staunch supporter of adopting shelter animals, Kelly has volunteered and fundraised for numerous animal welfare organizations including humane societies in the Carolinas and Florida and others throughout the country. Her French lop bunny, “Blossom” who took care of Kelly for nearly ten years before Dash excepted the job, was the inspiration for several fundraising events benefiting rabbit rescues in both North and South Carolina as well as Kelly’s children’s story, “The Rabbit Princess”. BD (Before Dash), Kelly also loved being a bunny foster mother.

In her day job as a culinary travel journalist for the past 14 years, Kelly writes for more than a dozen major daily newspapers and magazines including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, PLATE Magazine, The Naples Daily News, The Tasting Panel, Gulfshore Life, At Home Magazine, Canadian Architecture, Air-Tran In-flight Magazine, Portfolio and Views Magazines. She is also the author of "The Everything Family Guide to Budget Travel" (Adams Media, a division of F+W Media) and the Florida Editor for The Tasting Panel beverage trade magazine.

With a subspecialty in writing about animals and health, Kelly has contributed a myriad of animal stories including miniature horses, rescue dogs, pet ownership, pet industry professions, unique pets, animal sanctuaries, dog parks, K-9 law enforcement officers and other inspirational animals.

In addition to writing the great American novel to fund Dash’s obsession with Blue Buffalo turkey flavor soft-moist training treats, Kelly’s life goal is to own a Noah’s ark type of farm with a pair of each breed of dog she loves, naturally with Dash at the helm. Until then, she lives just outside the Florida Everglades with Dash and her husband, outdoor writer and fishing guide Capt. Kevin Merritt. Kelly is excited to be part of the Blog family.
