Because New Zealand has higher standards for their pet foods, we chose By Nature Active Defense+ (both this blend and their Tuna). Any person leaving negative reviews simply because their cat isn't eating it the first time out is not being fair to the product as it should be known that ANYtime you present a new food choice to a pet, you most often have to slowly integrate it into their diet (especially for a finicky cat) by mixing a percentage of their current food with a percentage of the new until you end up with more of the new, then all new. It is not only a wise thing to do, but most importantly, this approach is healthier for their systems (no upset tummies and throwing up). It's unfortunate that the ignorance of pet owners results in diminishing the reputation of a particular brand/food, which also in turn, influences others to buy or not buy.
By the way, my 2 cats love this food (and one of my cats IS a little finicky). They love this, again, along with the By Nature Active Defense+ Tuna. We intermix those two with an array of other foods as to not form any food sensitivities (if you feed your cat strictly chicken or turkey and nothing else, they can develop allergies resulting in various issues. But most detrimentally, because poultry is in such high demand these days, chickens and turkeys are pumped with antibiotics and hormones in the factory farms that supply the main food source. THIS, too, is causing health issues in both humans and animals—hence why we stopped feeding our kitties poultry altogether). They get Ziwipeak Rabbit/Lamb blend and also Ziwipeak Rabbit by itself (Rabbit is hypoallergenic for both dogs and cats—gentle on their systems), Evanger's Wild Salmon, and 3 different foods (non poultry) from International Fresh Markets Against the Grain, which are human grade foods.
Bottom line regarding the By Nature Active Defense+ Salmon, Mackerel & Sardines, there is NO reason to NOT feed this food to your cat(s). Just use some wisdom and a little common sense and you'll be fine ... and your cats will appreciate it as well. :)

Just like the turkey and salmon product. I do not know why all flavors cannot be presented with the same firm consistency as the chicken and chicken live and the chicken and lamb.
Quite dissapointed in Pahrump.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Littorina A little runny and only one cat likes it
I feed my 6 cats mostly By Nature 95% canned foods, and they're quite fond of most of them them, but this one hasn't been a winner with them. Two eat a little of it without enthusiasm, two won't eat it at all, one adores it with a passion, and the last one eats it, but she'll eat anything, including chocolate rum cake. Even the dog who likes to clean up the leftover cat food isn't keen on it. It's also fairly runny, much more so than the other By Nature foods, making it trickier to serve.

All cats love fish, right? It was a big surprise that my cats did not care for this.
I have a particularly finicky eater and finally discovered, after much frustration, that my guy loves the "By Nature" brand of stews. So I figured he would eat this too. Nope, he won't touch it, and my other chow hound will eat a little of it, although reluctantly and the rest ends up in the garbage.
I can't say that I would recommend it or not. Seems I managed to adopt two extremely picky eaters.
