Lower urinary tract disease (LUTD) refers to a group of disorders that commonly leads to irritation of the urinary tract and corresponding undesirable clinical signs. What causes Lower Urinary Tract Disease? In cats, bacterial infections are far less common. Urinary crystals and stones are often linked to this disease. The most common cause of Lower Urinary Tract Disease in cats is idiopathic cystitis. This diet promotes a urinary environment unfavorable to the development of both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals.

Key Benefits

  • Recommended for cats at risk of developing lower urinary tract disease
  • Dissolution of pure struvite uroliths
  • Help prevent struvite, calcium oxalate and phosphate uroliths
  • Provides nutrition that aids in the management of pure struvite uroliths
  • Relative Super Saturation (RSS) methodology predicts the crystallization potential of urine; RSS is used to develop diets that lower the concentration of ions contributing to struvite and calcium oxalate urolithiasis
  • Increasing the urine volume simultaneously reduces the saturation of urine with calcium oxalate and struvite crystals
  • Reduced level of magnesium, a natural component of struvite stones

Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Urinary SO Dry Cat Food 4.8 5 196 196
It Works! I have 5 cats with vet-handled urinary issues, mostly involving crystals. None have had urinary problems while being on this food...some for years. I read where sometimes owners take their cats off this food after they have been problem-free for a while - thinking they are cured. Crystals can be life-threatening (as in blockages) and this food keeps them from forming. They will form again if this food is stopped. Also, I have been told by the vet not to feed it to my cats that don't have urinary issues. Cats who don't form crystals can be messed up by the ph balancing ingredients in this formula. Expensive.... worth it? We will see. Our 3 year old male cat, Storm was treated for crystals in his urine and urinary tract. Our vet recommended Storm stay on Royal Canin SO for the remainder of his life as he is a "stone maker" and this would help prevent further problems. He has been on it for 2 months. So far, so good. However, the long term is unknown. We have 2 other indoor cats so we must feed it to them as well. The down side.... it is very expensive at $60 a bag. If it works it will be worth the cost but, we are wondering if it is necessary for the food to be this expensive and we are being taken advantage of by the pet food makers. May 24, 2013
The BEST urinary diet out there! I've been using this food for at least 5 years now. I found it by doing my own research on line and asked my vet if he could order it. My Manx cat used to get struvites about every 7-8 months; then he began also getting oxalates along with the struvites. My vet had been prescribing Hill's, but my cat hated it (and he'll eat anything) -- plus he still continued getting the problems every 7-8 months. This was the only food I could find that took care of *both* struvites and oxalates. The best part is my cat LOVES this food! He goes after it like it's a delicious treat. It certainly smells much better than Hill's! Knock on wood ... ever since I've been feeding him this food with a bit of Wellness canned mixed in, he has had no further problems!! Miraculous! I very highly recommend this excellent food. It has kept my cat much healthier and happier -- and as a bonus has saved a lot of vet bills! February 25, 2012
Same product; much better price The vet put my cat, now 12, on this product several years ago as she was having trouble passing stool. It has worked well and she likes it. It does make them drink a lot so it is important to provide plenty of fresh water.I have been purchasing it from the vet until my last visit when the price had TRIPLED. That's when I found it at this web site for a much more reasonable price. I got two bags to avoid shipping costs. I tried another urinary product from the pet store but my cat wouldn't touch it. My cat must be on a special urinary diet... he LOVES this product--both the canned and dried food varieties! My flamepoint cat, Noki, used to eat Hills CD urinary diet dry and canned food. But he wasn't drinking enough water (which concentrated his urine). So the vet put him on Royal Canin SO -- dry and canned foods -- formulated to make him thirstier (don't know how...) -- and he LOVES both and eats like a little piggy! I'm so happy... product lived up to its claims This product was prescribed by my vet for a cat w/urinary problems. My cat is very healthy with a beautiful coat, a good weight and no urinary problems. What is more, my cat enjoys eating it and will choose it over the food my other cats eat. Although pricey, the food is worth the money. January 12, 2013
Really works I have two male cats and they are urinary healthy thanks to this fine product. We lost one that had urinary problems and I don't ever want another cat to go through that when there is a simple solution like Royal Canin SO33. Great product and it works. March 11, 2012
You guys rock! One of my nine cats has to have this food to keep his current kidney/bladder issues at bay, so I have to buy this in bulk for ALL of them. It was becoming a real logistical problem getting to the vet every few weeks so they didn't run out, and since he cannot eat anything else for fear of health problems, it was always on my mind. Your website and delivery service have taken care of this problem for us. I no longer stress about my furkids running out of their medically necessary food. THANK YOU from all my kids!
