Product Description

Lower urinary tract disease (LUTD) refers to a group of disorders that commonly leads to irritation of the urinary tract and corresponding undesirable clinical signs. What causes Lower Urinary Tract Disease? In cats, bacterial infections are far less common. Urinary crystals and stones are often linked to this disease. The most common cause of Lower Urinary Tract Disease in cats is idiopathic cystitis. This diet promotes a urinary environment unfavorable to the development of both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals.

Key Benefits

  • Recommended for cats at risk of developing lower urinary tract disease and who are predisposed to weight gain
  • Moderate calorie content, helps maintain ideal weight
  • Dissolution of pure struvite uroliths
  • Help prevent struvite, calcium oxalate and phosphate uroliths
  • Provides nutrition that aids in the management of pure struvite uroliths
  • Relative Super Saturation (RSS) methodology predicts the crystallization potential of urine; RSS is used to develop diets that lower the concentration of ions contributing to struvite and calcium oxalate urolithiasis
  • Increasing the urine volume simultaneously reduces the saturation of urine with calcium oxalate and struvite crystals
  • Reduced level of magnesium, a natural component of struvite stones

Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Effective Diet for Maintaining Urinary Tract Health in Neutered Males The Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Urinary SO Moderate Calorie Dry cat food formula has been a godsend for our neutered male cat who has had 2 struvite crystal induced UTI's in the recent past. It performs exactly as described by discouraging formation of uroliths, increasing urinary volume, and encouraging the desire to drink more water. We make certain that Hector has plenty of fresh, cold water and the food itself does the rest in maintaining optimal health. Hector is frisky and bright eyed again after being on the Urinary SO formula. Incidentally, I spoke to a veterinary technician at Royal Canin who was very helpful. I was concerned that feeding Hector strictly dry cat food might still put him at risk for future UTI's; however the technician did an excellent job explaining how the formula works and reassured me that the dry formula alone is adequate for preventing formation of crystals. offers the best price anywhere on this rather expensive dry cat food, and they have outstanding customer service. Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product for my cats. I bought Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Urinary SO for my cat who developed an UTI. He loves the food. I decided to also try it on my other cats. They all love it also. I continue to receive it for my cats. I do ensure to give only the recommended amount to help my cats with their weight. It is a great product. September 3, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Go Mr. Chewy I have got to say that I wish I knew about Mr. Chewy a long time ago. Service is excellent with great prices. I love the fact that I don't have to keep running to Petsmart to find them out of stock of what I need. I have recommended Mr. Chewy to others and will continue to do so. June 28, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great for cats with urinary tract issues Good dry RX food, especially for my neutered 10-year-old , who has a history of urinary tract infection. July 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good for weight reduction My cat had gained weight over the last year and has a history of urinary blockage, I was feeding him Royal cannon SO, my daughter who is a vet tech suggested I switch him to the moderate calorie SO. I discussed it with his veterinarian and he agreed. I was afraid he would not like it as well but surprisingly he never noticed the difference. He is on his way to his former svelte self and much more active. I am very pleased with this product. January 8, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by So far so good... My male cat was having noticeable trouble urinating so I took him to the vet. $1,000 later it turns out he had almost full blockage in his urethra due to crystal buildup from his urine. The vet said it was because of his diet. I thought I was giving him good brands like Iams and Purina One Urinary Health, but apparently not. Some cats have very sensitive systems and require special food. That's my boy! It's been about 2 weeks since I switched his food, and so far, he seems to be urinating like normal. The food is expensive compared to other products, but if it can prevent what I went through it's worth it! August 14, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great for cats prone to urinary blockage Our male cat has had three occurrences of crystals in the urine- luckily all of them were caught before he developed a urinary blockage. After the third time in a year, our vet recommended the Royal Canin urinary diet. He hasn't had a problem since! I know there are other urinary diet mixes out there but I'm hesitant to try them since this one has worked so well at preventing the problem. It does change the pH of his urine- so certain types of cat litter won't clump (tidy cats, specifically). We just switched to the generic Petco brand and that works fine. July 10, 2015
