Rated 5 out of 5 by Duckplace Papillon foster recovering from 2-year neglect
I am fostering a tiny Papillon whose owners unwittingly neglected this wee female (GiGi) when the husband became very ill and his wife became her husband's primary caretaker until he passed on. GiGi's health was on the decline: bowing legs from excess weight; reddish soreness around her backend; hiding in the closet and fearful of everyone; tearing eyes; and, constant scratching.
The first thing I did was look on Chewy's website for healthy foods for my tiny charge. I knew her symptoms were signs of long-term allergies. "Blue Buffalo Freedom Small Breed Adult Chicken Recipe Grain-Free Canned Dog Food" was my choice. She loves it, gobbles it up, and I supplement it with a dry food that I chose from Chewy. I mix a little dry in with this food and add a little filtered water to get a texture that seems right for her.
GiGi has lost most of the excess weight; her eyes have stopped tearing; her backend soreness is gone; her scratching has almost stopped; and she is coming out of her shell. She's become alert, playful. . . a very different dog than she was just a few weeks ago. I also now give her a good dog probiotic which seems to help during this transition period.
