Our vet recommend we feed our dog a food with less protein in it due to our dogs dimished kidney function. Our dog likes this food, but a word of caution. Your dog will loose weight on this food because of the reduced protein in it. Ours lost 7 lbs. in 3 weeks. Per our vet, we now have changed from all NF to half NF and half her regular food. Our dog is happy and gaining weight again. Be vigilant when using any of these prescription or specialized dog foods.

My German Shepherd was diagnosed 2 years ago with kidney disease, the food she was on, a competitor, she started to not eat it.So I bought Purina Kidney function for her to try. I bought a 6# bag to see if she would eat it. She loved it. Put the bowl on the floor 5 minutes later GONE.Great food

Rated 5 out of 5 by dream It is a good product for dogs with special needs.
I found Chewy.com through a friend that owns a dog grooming salon. She asked how my puppy/ dog was doing. I mentioned that my baby now has to be on a special diet for her kidneys. She then told me about the Chewy site. I decided to try it. It is unfortunate that my dog has to be on a special plan, but thus far it is working; so I will continue to use the Purina NF product and order on-line.

My little Peke, Lexi needs this food and she really likes it too! The price here is the best, and I couldn't believe it arrived the next day! Thanks so much.

I sought out this food after my Vet recommended it. My dog has the early stages of kidney disease and her increased consumption of water was the first indicator for me. Not only does Izzy like the food but her water consumption is way down which makes me think her disease is in check or at least will progress at a much slower pace. All in all, I am as happy as a person could be with this food!! I highly recommend it for your loved one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Zadventurer Much cheaper than buying it from my vet
Much cheaper than getting it from my vet who recommended it for my dog who just went through her third bladder stone operation. She likes the taste but then again, she is not very picky.

Chewy has the best price/lb for the NF. I was debating about purchasing from my vet. I had about a weeks worth of food left and almost bought it in person. I liked that customer service called because I had a different billing and shipping address to confirm which address. The CS agent told me that once the RX was approved it would take 2 days to ship. This was Thursday and the RX was confirmed Fri. Initially when the tracking said the food would arrive Monday - perfect. I'll still have a few days of food left. The package didn't come in until Wednesday some time in the afternoon and the dogs ran out of food that morning - we had to improvise. Normally when a package is delivered it's fine to be left at the door but it was pouring down rain. The box was soaking wet and almost falling apart. The bag of food was also soaked but luckily the bag is thick so the food was not wet or soggy. We immediately transferred the food into a bin and cleaned up all the water brought in. I would've gone out to buy a smaller bag of food but because I was told 2 days for shipping (which I thought was a bit strange) with an ETA for Mon but not arrive until Weds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by chh3dognight The dog eats it, that's half the battle!
My 85lb coonhound lab mix dog refused to eat the Hills Kidney food. This was the next reasonably priced food on my list. I can say that my dog willingly eats it and that I initially put in some of his old kibble to transition him easily. The kibbles are bright yellow and are sort of "styrophomy" or puffed rice like in texture. They float in a water bowl. They are small and sort of get everywhere but it's a small price to pay, if he is willing to eat the food. How much it's actually helping, only time will tell. The ease of auto delivery and the price at Chewy make it easier than ordering from the vet.
