Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Urinary UC Low Purine Dry Dog Food, 18-lb bag

Cystine stones (uroliths) occur when an inherited defect of the kidneys causes a build up of cystine in the dog’s urine. Cystine is an amino acid that is filtered and reabsorbed by the kidneys. The build up of this amino acid in the urine leads to the formation of cystine stones. Certain breeds are more affected than others by cystine urolithiasis. These include English Bulldogs, Newfoundlands, Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, and Mastiffs. Mixed breed dogs with the ancestry of these genetically susceptible breeds can also be affected.

Key Benefits

  • Low purine proteins combined with the production of alkaline urine help to reduce the risk of urate stones
  • Moderate quantities of high quality proteins and controlled methionine and cystine levels help to reduce the formation of cystine stones
  • Enhanced levels of linoleic acid, zinc, and biotin help to promote a healthy skin and shiny coat
  • Naturally preserved to ensure freshness and quality

Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Urinary UC Low Purine My dog was put on this after 2 surgeries to remove stones.. 13 the 1st time, 16 the 2nd.. So far 6 months in, this seems to be controlling it. I think it is a bit expensive, but not as expensive as another surgery.. September 3, 2013
Highly impressed The customer service department is simply outstanding!! They were helpful, kind, and caring during a very stressful time. We are scrambling to get this product quickly and they went above and beyond to see that we successfully received this food ASAP. Our dalmatian loves this food and the autoship feature is fantastic. Thank you You are the best! May 31, 2013
Hassle free prescription This a RX only dog food. Chewy has a better price and hassle free buying. So much easier than a trip to the vet and less expensive too. January 1, 2015
Palatable! I couldn't have been more pleased when I needed to switch my dog over to veterinary feed. He has found this kibble to be very palatable and it has so far been effective in preventing more cystines from forming. December 22, 2014
Excellent food My dog has required two surgeries for bladder stones because he does not process purine well. He loves this food and eats every piece of it and often begs for more. It is easy for him to digest and he has had more frequent bowel movements with much less straining and discomfort than with his previous prescription food. He hasn't been on it long enough to know if it helping prevent stone formation, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. December 10, 2014
Low Purine benefits my dog that produces cystine stones Royal Canin is a great food to begin with and I am delighted that they make this veterinary diet food that my dog absolutely needs. I trust Royal Canin and my dog likes the food...enough said! December 8, 2014
