Orijen Dog Food

Biologically Appropriate Commitment

Dogs and cats are built like their ancestors, that's why all of Orijen's recipes are based on five Biologically Appropriate principals:

  • Rich and Varied in Fresh Whole Meats In nature, dogs benefit from a diversity of prey, so Orijen features meats, organs and cartilage from an assortment of cage-free poultry, free-range red meats and wild-caught fish.
  • Meat and Protein Rich Your dog is a carnivore, adapted for a diet rich in meat and protein. Orijen is loaded with 75-90% meat -- up to three times as much meat as conventional dog foods.
  • Carbohydrates Limited A dog's natural diet contains few, if any, carbohydrates. That's why Orijen replaces fast carbohydrates (such as potatoes and rice) with low-glycemic and regionally-sourced fruits and vegetables.
  • Fresh Fruits, Vegetables and Berries In place of cereal grains that spike blood sugars (such as rice and corn), Orijen features fresh orchard-grown fruits and vegetables that supply fiber and antioxidants in a natural form.
  • Botanicals Strengthen the Body and Spirit Providing an element of your dog's diet that he naturally craves, botanicals boost metabolism, strengthen organs and help cleanse the body of toxins.

Whole Prey Foods

In the wild, dogs consume the whole animal to meet their full dietary needs, so Orijen recipes incorporate three Whole Prey elements in specific ratios.

Meat | 70-85%

High meat inclusions means all amino acids are provided in natural form, without any synthetic supplements.

Edible Bone | 5-10%

5 to 10% bone, marrow and cartilage provide calcium, phosphorus, glucosamine and chondroitin in a natural source, without any artificial additives.

Organ Meat | 10-15%

10 to 15% fresh liver and tripe are a richly nourishing source of vitamins and minerals, including iron, zinc and vitamins A, B and D.

Fresh, Whole Food Ingredients

  • Licorice Root Licorice Root Supplies soluble fiber, soothes and nourishes the digestive tract, cleanses the colon and reduces insulin levels.
  • Cranberries and Blueberries Cranberries and Blueberries Rich in antioxidants, supports immunity and urinary health.
  • Angelica Root and Fenugreek Angelica Root and Fenugreek Supports digestion and provides protective antioxidants that defend the kidney against chronic damage.
  • Butternut Squash Butternut Squash Loaded with healthy fiber and a natural source of vitamins including B6 for immune support.

Customer Ratings & Reviews

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 475 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Happy pooch = Happy pooch parent Firstly, I'd like to say I have never submitted a review for anything. But Orijen deserves 10 minutes of my time! My dog, is like so many others. Rescued from a kill shelter at 9 weeks old - so sick from kennel cough and gastro and anorexic to boot....that finding a food that would stay down long enough for her to retain any sort of nutrition was a challenge. We didn't buy food off the grocery store shelf ever.....but what we were feeding her wasn't doing any good. She just didn't like it....Then after finding a very loving and caring vet, my husband and I started the process of allergy testing and found out that our pup was allergic to grain. So we started her on a vet diet. Hypoallergenic and vegan, but with a decent amount of protein. She ate and her tummy settled down and she started to put on weight. That was about 18 months ago. She isn't a ravenous eater, she never has been. She's never been 'regular' either. But after watching her almost stumble through another bowl of the boring vegan vet food I decided to go back on the research trail and try to find her something delicious. That's when I discovered Orijen. Finally, a company with fantastic core food values that seems to genuinely care about what our four legged family members eat! I bought a bag of the Regional Red and started (very very slowly) integrating this into her breakfast and dinner. The results were immediate. Number one - she devoured her food. Bowl empty. First time in 2 and a half years that has happened! After a week, her coat seemed thicker and so so shiny. She never had bad breath, but she didn't get it from Orijen either.....and now we've finished her first 5 pound bag (over about 3 weeks) and there has not been an upset tummy, no vomiting, regular awesome toilet trips and her energy levels are fantastic. She is a happy and healthier pooch who looks for her delicious Orijen food in her bowl (amongst her old vet food!). For a mum who has watched this pup turn from a raggedy, malnourished, boney little girl weighing 9 pounds to a 70 pound bundle of happiness - Orijen gets my vote. It puts a smile on my face to see her wagging tail at feeding time and to know she is getting great nutrition (that is delicious!!) and sustainably sourced will keep me buying Orijen products for a long time. Chewy also has the best price I've found! For your info I worked up from a third of a cup mixed in with a half quart of her vet food to two thirds of a cup mixed in with a little less that a quart of her vet food to now a cup of Orijen with the balance of the quart made up with her vet food over a period of about three weeks. This is given twice a day - breakfast and dinner. My little girl is a border collie - lab - pit bull mix who is now over 70 pounds and turns 3 in April. February 21, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love Orijen Red! We had been using Pedigree, I know yucky :( We did not know better and thought it was good for our dogs. Our lab use to shed very bad and our Scottie had severe skin allergies. I did some research and we first bought Orijen 6 fish....Dogs loved it, but it did not seem to be helping with the skin allergies. Switched to the Red and wow, what a difference!!!! No more scratching for our Scottie and our lab sheds much less now. Thanks Orijen Red!!!!! April 11, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by My GSD eats dry food again After 7 months of life, my male GSD decided he would prefer starving himself rather than eat dry dog food. For years I switched from Nutro to Merrick regular and then their Whole Earth. I would mix these dry foods with can dog food. He would eat if we coaxed him and he ALWAYS had diarrhea and stomach upset. About a year ago I decided to put him on a grain free diet. I had him on Taste of the Wild mixed with either Evo 95% or Wellness 95%. Again, he ate if coaxed, but at least now his digestive issues were gone. I previously compared Orijen's ingredients to TOTW and they seemed so similar that I could not justify paying more for Orijen. However, 2 weeks ago I tried the Orijen Adult dry and the Regional Red. My GSD loves this stuff, ESPECIALLY the Regional Red. He will even eat it dry. So I give him dry Orijen in the morning and Evo 95% or Wellness 95% mixed with the dry Orijen at night. After 4 years we finally have a dog that is happy to eat. No more coaxing, no more digestive issues and no more scratching! The ingredients might look similar to other grain free foods but are obviously much better in the Orijen if my picky eater likes it! February 12, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Won't feed anything but Orijen. I have tried other high quality foods on the market and none compare to Orijen. I rotate Regional Red and 6-Fish. Both of my dogs are nice and lean, their coats are shiny, and they love the taste. The ingredients are amazing and it's made by a company I trust. People always notice the condition of my dogs and want to know what I feed... I say Orijen! April 26, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Expensive but completely worth every penny. Healthy Frenchie! My rescue Frenchie absolutely loves this food. Her coat is so shiny and she just looks so healthy. I wish I had before and after photos of her from when I picked her up at the shelter to now. She had no hair behind her ears and on her tail and was underweight. She also had a sour odor to her skin. All of that has changed. Shes so happy and healthy! Thank you Orijen! March 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best food on the market By far the best food out there as far as I know. The ingredients speak for themselves. My boxer absolutely loves Orijen. His coat is always healthy and shiny and his energy level is great. Through extensive research I firmly believe in this company and their values. December 31, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Orijen Regional Red has given my dogs great results in their health and well being. Product has great ingredients without unknown fillers. I have two 13 month old shepherds that have allergies and need to eat grain free food. We switched to Orijen about 2 weeks ago and the dogs love it. The dogs do not scratch as much, their coat is shinny and soft, their stool is much firmer, and they eat a little less of this food compared to other grain free brands we have tried. They also seem to have more energy. This is a food I feel good about feeding my dogs, and will continue to buy and recommend to anyone. August 7, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Hands down...the best dog food!!! I have been feeding Orijen products since I bought my Boston Terrier, Lola, over a year ago. She started with Orijen Puppy, transitioned to Orijen Adult, and now Orijen Regional Red. Regional Red is by far the best and most expensive. She is very healthy, happy, and active. Thanks to the nutritious diet, she goes to the vet for preventive shots only. I'll buy Orijen 6-Fish next so she can have different flavor for a change. Chewy has the lowest price and best customer service. January 5, 2013
