    Important information for your pet...

By Martini on Nov 27, 2020

This test gave me insight as to what might be causing a lot of the itching and scratching my dog has been going through. Helps in eliminating certain foods and what other things may be causing her problems. A good start before going through extensive allergy appts. and tests.

    Slow and Questionable Results

By Ryan on Sep 1, 2020

Results were very slow to arrive. The results are difficult to interpret. One item that my dog reportedly has a high intolerance to is also displayed as a non-issue item. I do NOT recommend this product. I tried this test on one of my dogs but will not be using it again for my other dog.

    Do research before buying

    By on

Do your research & due diligence before buying this item, the methods used are pseudoscience and are not accurate. I showed the results of my 5strands test to my vet and she told me to disregard them completely, as I was concerned that the results show that my dog had an intolerance to literally every protein besides elk and quail.

    Our Experience

    By on

*****Back Story***** Our dog has had 'allergic tendencies' since she was a puppy. She used to get the red nail beds, itchy rear end, and licked a bald spot near her tail. We original thought it was a chicken/poultry allergy and eliminated that from her diet. This cleared up the red nail beds and itchy feet almost instantly. The problem persisted about the itchy bald spot on her rear, so we took her to the vet. (I worked in the vet equipment industry for 9 years, but I was not a veterinarian so - not an expert in the field but knew some things) The vet told us that 'dogs don't typically develop allergies and to just keep an eye on it'. This answer infuriated me as I *had been* keeping *****Back Story***** Our dog has had 'allergic tendencies' since she was a puppy. (I worked in the vet equipment industry for 9 years, but I was not a veterinarian so - not an expert in the field but knew some things) The vet told us that 'dogs don't typically develop allergies and to just keep an eye on it'. This answer infuriated me as I *had been* keeping an eye on it and it was something we had been dealing with for about 3 years at this point. My roommate heard that the floride in tap water may cause an issue, so we started giving her filtered water because, why not try everything? Within a week, the spot cleared up and no more itching. We were so relieved! But a month ago (about 3 months after switching to filtered water) the itching started up again. The rear end licking was non-stop, our girl was clearly in much discomfort. So before we headed back to the vet we decided to try this. We also got one for our cat, as she has began to lick the hair off of her legs after 6 years. *****Product***** The box comes with everything you need and crystal clear instructions. Great! The reason I gave this product a 4 star review is because the company gives you a self addressed stamped envelope to send your sample back. I spent $300 on the two kits, I wasn't risking this getting lost because of a SASE and a postal error. So I went to my local post office and sent them priority mail with insurance and tracking (and extra $10 per envelope for peace of mind was okay by me). You will receive an email from the company when they receive your sample, so that was definitely a relief. *****Results***** You will get your results within 5-7 business days after the sample is received. We got ours in 3 via email. You receive a checklist of all the things that are evaluated and then a personalized one for your pet. Page 1 is how to interpret the instructions (I have included a screen shot of this page). Then the results. According to this our dog is sensitive to just about everything. Poultry, which we suspected, but also beef, sweet potatoes, pearled barley, etc... were all a Level 3 rating. Sweet potato is in all of her treats and pearled barley is the second or third ingredient in her "grain free low ingredient dog food". I've spent the past 2 hours scouring Chewy for alternatives to what we feed and are trying new things. But I am grateful to 5Strands for giving me an idea of where to start before going back to a vet, if necessary. ***I have included some of our results below. This is not the entire document, but I wanted to show examples*** … more

    Fast results!

    By on

Purchased thru the 5strands website, but just needed to share a review. My vet recommended a dermatologist to figure out why my cat was scratching his face to the point of large sores. My vet suspected a food allergy was causing it. I decided to send his hair into 5strands and I got results in 5 days after they notified me they received his hair. Now I know what foods are making him itchy for a fraction of the price and can hopefully get him on the road to recovery.

    Trying is out..

    By on

I got the product knowing well my dog has allergies. We have tried A LOT of things. I saw this and thought this could be great. When we got the results back (10 days) I read through everything and marked yes or no on the things we could try. Come to find out a lot of stuff that was level 3 was in my dogs dry food and in a lot of other brands. Right there is when I decided to give my dog human grade food and cook for her. This is just the starting point. We have other obstacles to overcome. Hopefully we will start seeing results soon. I have a small dog and a picky one at best but we are working with her on this adventure.

This test was a game changer for our family!

    By on

The results from this test helped us determine what foods our dog could eat without having to spend thousands of dollars trying out different dog foods while watching our pet suffer from horrible itching and scratching all day. Within 2 weeks of changing our dog's food, we saw a noticeable difference. She is on the road to recovery and the whole family is happy now!

    What a great starting point!

    By on

I wanted to get my pet allergy tested, but during this time all Vet's are closed in my area. I searched online and found this test! I received a great elimination guideline. I corrected a few things in Diamond's diet and she stopped biting her paws! She also had some hair loss from scratching which stopped! Very pleased. I attached part of his results, the results are lengthy but very detailed. More items showed than expected but I know these are temporary and not permanent.

    Not sure yet

I sent in the hair specimen after purchasing this product. I’ve since realized there is NO registration form, and I’m eagerly expecting an email from someone that they have the results. I’m slightly apprehensive since there was no registration or activation process and I have no idea who the email will come from. I will update my review if I ever hear from them. In 2 days it will be 2 weeks since I sent out the specimen. While chewy is an awesome pet website, I’m finding this a frustrating process to mail in and wait.

    Someday I may get results

It's been over 2 weeks and I haven't gotten an email or anything from this company. Feel like I was cheated.
