Anyone else noticed a change to this product since being manufactured by new owner? There used to be a wonderful pumpkin smell when you would open the bag and it wasn't so dark brown. Now it smells band like every other average kibble and looks cooked to death. I noticed the color & smell change when I was finishing one bag and opened the next. Sad that Champion sold out so their product could be changed to just average because we really liked it. Also seeing more grass eating by my dog. Going to try Honest with grains
I have been feeding Acana Wholesome Grains for the entire life of both of my dogs. Finn is two, and Harper is turning four in a few days. They have always done fine on this food and have always been healthy. They always ate the sea to stream but I would switch the flavor every couple months because they would get bored and this was my second go to flavor. I never had a problem. I don’t know if they changed the ingredients or what happened but I started them back on this flavor a couple weeks ago, causing extreme G.I. upset in both of my dogs. I fed a bland diet and am now trying out Hills sensitive skin and stomach pollock recipe which only comes in a very small bag. I’m super disappointed because I have two picky eaters and this is all they liked, in addition to Harper having a Chicken allergy, making it impossible to find a decent food for her.
Tried Ancient Grains due to news about grain-free and heart problems. Lab and English Bulldog both became itchy (paws and ears especially), coats became so dull and greasy, shedding increased. Stools were loose, sometimes watery. The food itself is SO DUSTY. Good inch or so of powdery garbage at the bottom of each bag. Switched to Orijen 6 Fish to heal their coats/skin - no itching, shiny coats, and healthy stools within 10 days.
A couple months ago both of our Chiweenies were suffering with allergies. There was a time when only our male (Scooter) had issues of persistent licking, but then our female (Paris) began scratching and licking. I felt a visit to our veterinarian was in order and quite possibly a change in food. Decided to try the LAMB & PUMPKIN within the Wholesome Grains variety. Both of our little ones love it. I have also fed the Beef and they liked that, but this really got them excited. In addition to the allergy medication, their licking and itching has calmed down 95%. I am so happy they are more comfortable. I do wish ACANA would offer this variety in a midsize bag of 12 Lbs. There would be less trips to the cardboard recycling. The 4lb is small for two dogs and the 22Lb is too large and heavy for me to lift.
We have a dog with a highly sensitive digestive system. After extensive research, we landed on this food and thought it may be a good fit. It caused digestive upset and made him itchy. He gave himself lick granulomas on both front legs. We switched him to an RX diet and the licking almost immediately stopped and diarrhea stopped. We gave the leftover food to our other 2 dogs and it caused them to be excessively itchy and have diarrhea. Needless to say, it’s going in the trash.
Our GSD absolutely loves this food, and it's great for her sensitive tummy. We tried a few different brands of kibble, and this seems to be the best one for her. I did a LOT of reading about dog food ingredients, and Acana was one of the few brands that I feel comfortable with. I only wish they had a medium size bag - the only options are 4lb or 22lb.
We've fed our dogs and cats acana brand food for the past two years, it felt like a great healthy option that we felt good about them eating. However we recently switched our dogs from the Acana wholesome grains small dog recipe because our dachshund was starting to lose weight. We hoped that a change in flavor and shape might help but both dogs don't love it. We're still working through this bag but we decided to switch brands to Blue Buffalo. Not sure if acana has recently changed their formula but it's not working for us anymore.
I have a yellow lab/pitty mix and he will eat about anything. I put this food in front of him, he sniffed it, and gave me a look like "really?". He refuses to eat it unless I add bone broth to mask it. It smells like straight-up hay and my non-picky eater hates it. I feel so bad giving this to him. So not worth it.
My 15 yo maltipoo is allergic to chicken, and the other is a picky eater. So far, after 2-3 weeks of eating the Lamb & Pumpkin dry food, they are licking their bowls clean and no allergic reactions. I have switched around with Acana wholesome grains proteins the past year, avoiding chicken, and they both have done really well.
Dogs like it and I am happy it contains grains.
