Grow healthier, more vibrant plant life in your freshwater aquarium with Activ-Flora Planted Aquarium Substrate. This Bio-Activ, nutrient-enriched gravel contains a wide variety of essential minerals to help your aquatic plants thrive and achieve optimum growth more quickly. It’s also rich in iron, so you won’t need to add laterite, and it contains no artificial dyes or additives. Thanks to its vast reserve of micronutrients that are slow-released over time, Activ-Flora substrate is indefinitely self-sustaining. As an added benefit, live heterotrophic bacteria provides instant cycling to help remove harmful nitrogenous waste immediately without altering your pH.

For new setups, empty contents of bag into aquarium and fill with de-chlorinated tap water or distilled water. Activ-Flora will automatically bi-segment into two layers with finer grade substrate on the bottom.
If adding to an existing system, drain liquid prior to introducing new substrate and add slowly, while mixing.
Activ-Flora Planted Aquarium Substrate is pre-washed by a nutri-stabilizing process to preserve abundant trace elements and reduce cloudiness when introduced to an aquarium. Cloudiness can be further minimized by filling tank at a slow rate so that the Activ-Flora base is not disturbed. Slight initial cloudiness is normal and will clear rapidly (1–6 hours).
Plants must be placed in substrate with roots as deep as possible. Stabilize with rocks, wood or other decorative medium. This bag is sufficient for about a 5 cm (2 inches) deep bed in a typical 40 L (10 gallon) tank.
Recommended use is 1 kg (2 lbs) for approximately each 200 cm (31 inches) of tank bottom at a depth of 5 cm (2 inches).

I ordered 3 bags of aquarium substrate here. I also ordered 3 bags of substrate from a big-box competitor who had a buy-2/get 1 free promo. Well, the Chewy box arrived with no hassles or delays. The big-box store order...only half of it arrived. Boxes were wet and torn to shreds. Have spent too much time on the phone with them trying to sort of what happened, where the rest of my order is, and how to replace it...a wasted week with them, whereas Chewy just takes care of their business and everything works. THAT's HUGE.... Thank you, thank you, thank you!
No cloudiness, no rinse needed, deep black, heavy weight, finer than basic gravel but bigger than coarse sand. plants live this and so do I now! 20 lbs bag substrate is comparative to a 10 lb bag of sugar for eye measurer. I mixed with caribsea eco complete(that's cloudy and messy, prefer this one by far!) And covered with pool filter sand. Great combo for live plant tank for nutrition, looks, and to keep cost down
The gravel is a nice natural color. What I don't like is that it is very coarse with really uneven pebble sizes, some a fine grit and some as big as my thumbnail. I do not like the fine claylike sediment that becomes suspended in the water. I prefer sand to gravel. Plants do grow in it, but I have had equal luck with sand and plant tabs. It's really not attractive.
I followed direction listed on the activ-flora. I did not rinse the gravel. There was a bit of cloudy water but was all gone in a day. My seeds seem to love it. Pictures show a 7-10 growth. My only negatives are the smell and the slim....
So, I set up a new tank and followed the directions. My tank was still cloudy for over a week, but after a water change it was all good. My tank also cycled in 1.5 weeks, so I think this product did help speed up the cycle. And I like how it looks. All in all, a solid product.
This substrate is awesome. It's a really beautiful blend of stones and colors. The bacteria in it is helping my tank to cycle quickly and I'm really happy with how things are going so far. Love this substrate
Two years in fish are still alive every decoration is in the same place but I cant get a single thing to grow in it well hair algae grows fine I couldn't even get floating plants to live that's with co2 and a fluval light I regret buying this trash
So far so good. Followed the instructions for the most part. Though I did it a little backwards, then let the filter do its thing for a day, and it's beautiful. The plants look great too. Will keep an eye on it and edit if need be. Just gotta let the sediments settle and/or filter out
Beautiful substrate for my 29 gallon, i ordered 2 bags. Water did cloud some but was clear after 24 hours, do not rinse this stuff or you loose all the nutrients for your plants. Gives a natural look and not dark colored, also the rock is mostly rounded and smooth as well
Settles fairly quickly after addition of water and live plants. Water is still tinted slightly but it’s not a problem. My plants are growing well and my Betta fish is happy.
