Anipryl is a type of oral medication called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). It is used in order to manage symptoms associated with senility (Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome). It is also prescribed to treat Cushing's disease in dogs when the cause is a pituitary tumor.
Always follow the prescribed directions given by your veterinarian. Anipryl is generally given by mouth once a day in the morning.
If you do not understand the directions your veterinarian gives you regarding the use of this medication, call him/her for further clarification.
Anipryl causes a rise in dopamine levels in the brain. This can help to improve cognitive processes in the brain.
You should start to notice an improvement in your pets senility symptoms. Results can vary from pet to pet and it may take several weeks to notice an improvement.
It can also take four to eight weeks to notice a chance in your pet when treating pituitary-dependent Cushings disease. If results are not observed within this time period, contact your veterinarian for re-evaluation.
After trying a host of different vitamins, supplements and medication’s, this finally helped my senior dog settle at night. He has been struggling with sundowners symptoms for months.
Our dear sweet 13 year old yellow lab started getting signs of canine demential including incessant barking (she hadn't barked a day in her prior 13 years!), agitation, crying, pacing and she flipped to days and nights. She couldn't even really focus on us, she would just stare out into space and bark in this high pitched agitated way. It was a crisis in our home with an unconsolable dog, so we took turns being up all night walking her around and trying to comfort her. The vet was great and tried various sleeping and sedating medications for the agitation, but she had an idiosyncratic reaction to them and they ramped her up even more! Then she acted punch-drunk but still barking and agitated all night! It was heartbreaking for us to see. The vet mentioned Anipryl and said it was worth a try and she had seen it work in some of her patients about 50% of the time. We started with a half pill to make sure she could tolerate it ok and then advanced to the full dose. Within DAYS we started to see improvement and within a couple WEEKS she had flipped her days and nights back to normal, the crying, anxiety, agitation and barking had stopped. We got our sweet dog back! Honestly, it was like a miracle drug for her and we felt SO appreciative to have been able to get it for her AND our Nationwide Pet Insurance covered the cost! It may not work for all dogs, but if your vet recommends it, I would give it a try. It was such a blessing for our sweet loving girl and we had another year with her after that.
My dog has side effects from this medication. He was vomiting. As soon as I stop the medication, he stops vomiting. He was taking it for 10 days. I did not see any improvement. He has dementia. He is 17 years old.
Medication works well and helps our dog sleep all night. Chewy has the lowest price we found for this medication.
my 14 year old bull terrier has cognitive issues my vet prescribed anipryl i gave her two doses and she became violently ill vomiting and diahrrea so we discontinued use.
This cognitive booster medication for my elderly lab came quickly and seems to be helping lessen her disorientation.
I don't know that much about this drug never heard of it until the vet suggested it so if she had not recommended he go on it I probably would not have bought it. I'm not one to jump at the chance to use another drug. They are pricey and there is no guarantee it will work. They also come with side affects.
My 12-yo lab had been increasingly struggling with canine cognitive disorder. Every night she would suffer from sundowners syndrome - pacing, excessive drooling, jumping on weird furniture like tables, and ultimately trying to escape my yard. I felt helpless as I knew it was her brain and no pain or anxiety meds (which we already tested) could “cure” her. After a doctor RX I saw a change within the first month on this pill, and we are now in month 4. No more escape attempts, she sleeps through most nights, and has returned to her normal self. 6-months ago I wasn’t sure she would make it through summer, but I am so thankful to have found this “helper” for her brain!!!
Our 16 year old Aussie developed cataracts late in life and we opted to not treat given the low likelihood of a positive outcome. So he is essentially blind. I attributed some of his worsening behavior like spinning in a circle to his loss of sight. My wife theorized that it was actually doggie dementia. After consulting our vet we put our guy on anipryl. The first night was terrifying. He seemed to get a lot worse. And he became weak. The next day we reduced the dose and it seemed to stop the new issues but didn’t seem to help with the symptoms we put him on the med for in the first place. We decided that since the med keeps dopamine in his system longer he is probably feeling pretty good even if physically he was struggling. And if this was all that’s left for him we were going to have to make the hard loving choice so what did we have to lose. So we returned the recommended higher dose, toughed it out with our boy and by day 4 the miracle started. It’s day 8 on 8/3/2020 and it looks like our boy has gone back in time 6-8 months. We couldn’t be happier and are eager to see what he is like after the 4 weeks the manufacturer cites in their literature about the product. I hope you all have the same great experience. Good luck.
My 16-yr-old doxie made a noticeable change after a just few days on this medication! She had retreated into herself, got stuck in corners having lost her ability to back up, and was anxious. I had first had her on an anti-anxiety medication but it all it did was dull her. Now she's back to seeking me out (altho I don't think she really knows who I am anymore), wags her tail even sometimes; just seems so much Happier. She's better at getting herself out of jams by herself (getting stuck staring in corners, etc.) now too. Thank you, Anipryl.
