About API Testing

Testing the Waters

For fish to thrive, their aquarium water must be similar to the water in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause stress, illness and even the loss of your fish. Important water quality parameters include ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. These can vary over time, and they are invisible to the eye, which is why it is necessary to test weekly. Choose from a wide range of API testing options like the Freshwater Master Test Kit or 5-in-1 Test Strips to accurately evaluate your water.

Pressed for Time? Just Dip and Read

Simply dip an API test strip into your aquarium, swirl it twice, and then use the color-coded chart to determine if your water is within safe parameters or if adjustments are needed. That’s it! API test strips are available in a 5-in-1 version, which includes testing for pH, nitrite, nitrate, carbonate, and general hardness. Ammonia and pH test strips are also available so you can mix and match according to your needs.

The Scientific Approach

Get professional results from the comfort of your home with API test kits. Measure up to six parameters with API Master Test Kits, or pick and choose from a wide variety of individual test kits. Both types of kits come with test tubes and a laminated, calibrated color card. API test kits allow for numerous tests, making them an inexpensive way to help keep your aquarium water quality in check.

How to Correct Aquarium Water Parameters

Too Much Ammonia?

Ammonia is released into the water through gills, urine, uneaten food and more. API Ammo-Lock detoxifies it instantly.

Inappropriate pH Levels?

Fish require a specific pH level to thrive. Use API pH Down to lower freshwater aquarium water pH to the right level.

Too Much Nitrite?

Use API Quick Start to quickly consume nitrite and help maintain an active biological filter.

Nitrates Too High?

API Nitra-Zorb helps remove nitrate and other toxins that can be harmful to fish and lead to algae growth.

Questions & Answers

3 Customer Questions

is it correct for the #2 bottle to have a slightly bigger hole in the spout than the #1 bottle does? I'm concerned my test kit isn't accurate because of this.
Answer by ChewyFeb 08, 2018
The Dropper tips are all the same, the viscosity of the liquids are different and it may appear to be a larger drop coming out because of the thickness of the drop.

Do these expire?
Answer by ChewyMay 04, 2022
The API liquid testing kits do expire over time. There will be an expiration date stamped on the back of the box, to show you the earliest expiring reagent within the kit. Each reagent bottle will have its own expiration date stamped on the bottle itself, so that you are able to check it directly. Throughout API's line of liquid testing, reagents will either have a 3 year or a 5 year expected shelf life. For the Ammonia Test Kit specifically, the reagents expire 5 years from the date of manufacture.

What color should the ammonia level be in a fresh water tank, none of your instructions indicate what color a healthy tank should be.
Answer by ChewyDec 25, 2018
The ammonia levels in an established aquarium should be at 0 part per million.

A must-have for aquarium owners

I use this test kit at least weekly on my 3 tanks. It's easy to use and you can see the results in just a few minutes. More accurate than the paper strips, so I highly recommend this kit.

API PRODUCTS ARE VERY DEPENDABLE

My husband keeps up on our 55 gallon tank cleaning it diligently every week and keeping up with all the chemicals in the water. He has the full test kit but when he starts to run low of one of the test liquids I put in a order. He likes all the API products. They seem to be more dependable.

Before adding fish..

Checking Ammonia level is critical after new set-up .. or any major changes. Overfeeding is standard when introducing fish etc. to new tank. Ammonia level can spike overnight. Have used this for as long as they have been making it.. it seems. Been keeping live-bearers since late '70's.

Would buy again

I bought the complete test kit and needed to refill the ammonia test liquid. As far as I know this is very accurate and if you are new to the hobby you should buy the complete test kit. Worth every penny.

Thanks for the quick help

First of all this is a terrific company I have used for kitty supplies for a long time. I recently set up an aquarium and had a minor crisis. Without leaving my house I was able to quickly identify and correct the problem. On my porch the next day and solved the problem.

Probably the most important test kit

There are many pond test kits but the ammonia level is your first cue something is wrong and you need to pay attention to your pond

Simply to use

The instructions for use is easy to read and understand and are in multiple different languages. The color chart is eady to understand. The water color that is being tested in the tube, after test solutions added, are clear and sharply obvious colors so easy to match to color chart to determine the levels.

Liquid tests are key

I’ve been using this product for over 10 years. Dip strips are just NOT the same. The liquid test is more precise, more accurate and easier to read, in my opinion. Also, very important, if you don’t have a bunch of tanks, it’s very important to rebuy before the expiration - you may not go through the whole bottle before then if you have just a single 10 gallon tank.
