FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should the product be stored?

Store in a dry place if clumping cat litter comes in contact with water, clumps will form. But it will not be affected by humidity.

Can I use this in animal cages or in litter boxes for pets other than cats?

No, it is not recommended.

Is ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter antibacterial?

No. The litter box is a dirty place. Each time your cat uses the litter box, feces and urine introduce odor-causing bacteria. Although the product is not antibacterial, ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter utilizes genuine ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda to eliminate odors caused by bacteria.

Is the carton recyclable?

Yes, The package is made from 100% recycled materials with 35% from post consumer sources. It is recyclable in areas that accept this type of carton. Please check with your local recycling center for details.

Does the product contain animal by-products?

No.

Does ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter contain Baking Soda?

Yes, all ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litters contain pure ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda.

Should I use ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter Deodorizer in conjunction with ARM & HAMMER™ Clumping Cat Litter?

It is not necessary to use ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter Deodorizer with ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter but using both will give you an extra boost of freshness.

Why is ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter Deodorizer still needed?

ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter Deodorizer is designed to eliminate litter box odors that ordinary scoopable and clay litters can't. The powder formula also prevents the litter from sticking to the bottom of the box, making litter box clean up even easier.

Is ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter dust-free?

As the package indicates, all ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litters are 99% dust-free.

Does ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter track?

As with any litter, it is possible some particles may scatter outside the box when the cat uses or leaves the box. However, unlike traditional clay litters, clumping litter should not get muddy in the litter box so your cat will not leave muddy footprints or tracks outside the litter box.

What is toxoplasmosis?

Toxoplasmosis is a condition caused by a parasite sometimes found in cat feces. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling used cat litter. Pregnant women and those with suppressed immune systems should be especially careful to always do so. Unused ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter in its original package does not contain these parasites.

What is the pH of ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter?

All ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litters are slightly alkaline.

Is ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter safe for pets including kittens?

We are extremely confident of the safety of ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter, when used as directed. During its development, ARM & HAMMER™ clumping Cat Litter was evaluated by numerous consumers (and their cats) with no adverse effects. Additionally the safety of baking soda is well known and documented.

Can ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter cause Feline Urinary Syndrome (also known as a urinary tract blockage)?

Feline Urinary Syndrome (FUS) is a common condition that especially affects male cats. Although there are many theories on what causes or contributes to FUS, there is no indication that clumping (or traditional clay) cat litter causes FUS in cats or kittens.

What is the source of ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter ingredients?

The main ingredients in ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter are derived from mineral and plant sources.

Does ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter expire after a period of time? What is the shelf life?

ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter does not lose its effectiveness over time.

How long does a box or bag of ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter last?

The amount used varies depending on the frequency of litter box usage as well as the number of cats in your household.

How often should I change the Cat Litter in the litter box?

The frequency with which your cat uses the litter box and the number of cats that use the litter box will determine how often the litter box should be changed. Some consumers change their litter box on a regular schedule (every few days, or weekly, or on trash day, etc.), others change it when it looks wet or when odor is noticeable. Remember, as your cat uses the litter box, scoop out soiled clumps and solids. After you remove the odor clumps and solids, replace the discarded litter with a sprinkling of fresh litter, making sure to maintain at least 3-4 inches of litter in the box.

What if my cat eats the litter?

It is not normal for a cat to eat cat litter and it may be a sign of illness. Your veterinarian should be contacted immediately. (Please be assured that should a small amount be ingested during normal grooming, your cat's intestinal tract should naturally move the material through the cat's system.)

What if my dog eats the litter?

Although dogs sometimes eat cat litter and other foreign objects, you should remove the litter box from your dog's reach and contact your veterinarian immediately. Ingestion of litter and foreign objects may indicate illness.

What is Clumping Litter or Scoopable Litter? How does it differ from traditional Clay Litters?

Clumping or scoopable litters utilize the "clumping" properties of sodium bentonite, a naturally derived special type of clay, to control litter box odors. This special type of clay uses the moisture it absorbs to bond soiled litter particles into clumps for easy removal and disposal. Litter boxes using clumping litters can be cleaned by removing only the soiled litter and sprinkling a new layer of clumping litter in the box. The box is fresh for use without the unpleasant task of emptying, washing and drying! Ordinary clay litters can absorb moisture, but cannot isolate it for easy removal. Since soiled litter is a source of odor-causing bacteria, clay litter must be completely changed frequently to prevent odor build-up. This involves discarding the entire contents of the litter box, washing and drying the box, and replacing the litter-a messy and smelly task... Cats love a clean litter box and nothing is cleaner than fresh clumping litter. Cats think clumping litter is the best thing since catnip...we think you'll agree!

Can ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter be used for traction during icy conditions?

No. ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter, as well as other clumpable or scoopable litters, should not be utilized for ice traction.

How does ARM & HAMMER™ Double Duty Clumping Litter differ from other ARM & HAMMER™ Cat Litter?

ARM & HAMMER™ Double Duty is the only clumping litter with a formula that combines moisture activated ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda crystals with urine and feces odor neutralizers to destroy both overpowering odors on contact.

What are the ingredients in ARM & HAMMER™ Double Duty Clumping Litter?

ARM & HAMMER™ Double Duty contains clay for absorbency, clumping and deodorization. It also contains powerful compacted ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda crystals for deodorization, as well as a fresh scent fragrance that is activated when it comes in contact with moisture.

Is ARM & HAMMER™ Double Duty scented or unscented?

ARM & HAMMER™ Double Duty has a fresh scent that refreshes every time your cat uses the litter box.

Can ARM & HAMMER™ Double Duty Clumping Litter be used in multiple cat households?

Yes, ARM & HAMMER™ Double Duty’s powerful feces odor neutralizers are designed to work for multiple cats.

How should I dispose of the litter?

You should dispose of the used litter in the trash. Do not flush litter in the toilet or place it in the drain.

I clean our 4 litter boxes twice a day. I have used 3-4 boxes of this 40LB litter over several months. At first I was thinking it was a bad batch. This litter does not stay clumped when scooping. It leaves smaller clumps behind that fall through the scooper. It badly sticks to the bottom, scraping it up breaks up the clump and leaves super hard mounds on the bottom. Any litter with wet waste on it spreads throughout and mixes with the rest of the "good" litter. I've been literally cleaning out the litter boxes, dumping out all the litter and washing out the litter box every week. I've even broken a scooper trying to pry up the junk on the bottom. I have attached a photo showing just one week of this litter and I had just cleaned out the litter box at this time. The dark spots are leftover urine pieces that never clumped or fell apart. The light/dark ripple is not shadow. It is impossible to clean up without dumping out all the litter. This litter is acting like a regular non clumping clay litter, it's rather disgusting, messy, disappointing and there is a large amount of ammonia smell. I use 3 inches of litter in each litter box and all 3 look like this one and smell the same. I will be discontinuing use and moving on to another brand. … more

  • Have used this for more than a decade!

    By on

I've been buying this brand for at least 12 years, and my cats and I love it. I was hauling 20 lb. boxes at least 4 times/month. I'll be 82 yrs. old this March, and I'm thrilled that I don't have to do that anymore because of Chewy's delivery service. Since I'm a new customer, I just became aware of this complete delivery system. I'm signing up today!

  • Great Litter

    By on

We have 3 kitties and this is the best cat litter we've found for them. Tried everything, but there was always a smell or didn't clump properly.. This eliminates the smell very well, hardly know it's there. It clumps great and so is very easy to scoop. Definately recommend this.

    By on

I am so happy with how quickly we receive our products, how user friendly the website is, and love how my kitty loves the boxes her goodies come in. One of the best things I have ever done and I will recommend this service to pretty much anyone who has pets. The litter works as litter should. Happy all around.

  • Keeps down on the smell

    By on

Ive tried all different types of litter, for my little girl, but nothing cuts down on the smell like this brand, But like any other litter you of course have to clean out daily or every other day. But I don't have to change the whole box but once a month.

  • Keeps odor down and cats like it

    By on

Cats can be particular when it comes to litter, so when I find one that my cats actually enjoy using I have to sing its praises. Arm and Hammer Double Duty does what it advertises - it keeps ammonia odor to a minimum and it clumps, making it easy to clean the litter boxes. It is lightly scented as well, so when the cats start to dig in the box, a faint soapy fragrance is released. The 40 pound box fills two and a half standard litter boxes, or two deep pans.

  • Poor quality liter

    By on

The only Double Duty about this liter is the double duty work you have to do cleaning the liter box! It does not clump well, other than pulling in more of the clay, making it "mushy". This uses up more of the liter, making more waste! Then adding insult to it all, it soaks to the bottom or sides of the box, making you have to scrape it away...Oh, not to mention how it sticks to the scoop! Don't waste your money! If you want to scrape the litter box, buy cheap non-clumping liter! Not this! If you want the good stuff, go with Tidy Cat!
