FAQ

What is compounding?

Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.

Why do some pets need compounded drugs?

Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:

  • Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
  • Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
  • Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.

Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

How do I order my pet's prescription medications?

Create or sign into your Chewy account.

  1. Find the item(s) you wish to order and add your item(s) to your cart.

  2. At Checkout, enter your Pet and Veterinarian information.

  3. Select whether you want Chewy to contact your Veterinarian or if you will be mailing the prescription to us.

  4. Select a saved shipping address or add a new address.

  5. Select or enter your preferred payment method.

  6. Review and select Place Order to complete your order.

Do I need to have a prescription on hand before I order a prescription item?

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Is Chewy Compounding Pharmacy licensed or otherwise verified?

Chewy Compounding Pharmacy is licensed in its resident state of Kentucky and each state into which we ship compounded medications.

How and where does Chewy source the ingredients for compounding?

We source all our compounding ingredients from FDA registered manufacturers and distributors.

Do prescription medications require authorization from my veterinarian?

Yes. Chewy Pharmacy can only dispense medication with a valid, patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Will you contact my veterinarian directly to approve my prescription medication?

Yes. If you have selected for us to contact your veterinarian, we will contact them to obtain a valid, patient-specific prescription.

How long does it take to process my prescription after the pharmacy receives it?

Prescriptions are typically processed by the pharmacy within 24-48 hours after receipt of a valid prescription form the veterinarian.

Can I set up auto refills for medications that treat a chronic condition?

Yes. If you have valid refills on file with Chewy Pharmacy, you can set up an Autoship for medications.

Great solution for our Cat :)

    By GreenTea21 on Dec 17, 2020

Our kitty does really well with this product! After our kitty was diagnosed with a mild congenital heart irregularity that resulted in the occasional seizure, he was prescribed a small dose of Atenolol to keep his heart rate stable and prevent the seizures from occurring. Initially we were dissolving a 1/2 a pill in warm water and giving it to him via syringe 1x per day. While he tolerated it, this wasn't a pleasant experience for him and we were concerned about dosage inconsistency as he would sometimes hack a little afterward or shake his head and we noticed some small droplets of the liquid around his mouth or on the floor. So we decided to switch to this and it's been a game changer. He seems Our kitty does really well with this product! So we decided to switch to this and it's been a game changer. He seems to like the chicken flavor and doesn't run away when we go to give it him. Huge plus! Side note that we also ordered and use the topical Atenolol available from Chewy and use a very small dose on his ear during the last week of each month as his hormones seem to change and he will have a seizure at this time. Adding that small topical dose seems to get him through this little rough patch each month and we are seizure free. … more
