Description

Atopica is an oral solution prescribed to dogs who suffer from allergic dermatitis—a skin reaction caused by contact with an allergen. This is very common in canines with allergies, and can cause their skin to become uncomfortably itchy, red and scaly. Atopica targets the root of the problem to help relieve itching, so your companion no longer feels the need to incessantly scratch, rub or lick. Atopica can help provide your dog the relief she needs.

Uses

Atopica is indicated for the control of atopic dermatitis in dogs weighing at least 4 lbs. (1.8 kg) body weight.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are usually mild and often get better with time.

Common but not serious side effects include:

-Vomiting, reduced appetite, diarrhea. These effects are seen in approximately 1 in 3 dogs usually in the first 1-2 days after starting the drug and often improve over time. Your veterinarian may prescribe anti-vomiting medications or temporarily stop the drug if these occur.

-Overgrowth of gums (gingival hyperplasia) and skin growths (both are rare).

-Lethargy (tiredness, lack of energy). You don’t have to be overly concerned if you see any of these signs unless they are severe, worsen, or continue to be a problem. Contact your veterinarian if this happens.

Side effects that may be serious or indicate a serious problem:

-Infection. Watch for signs of infection such as fever (103°F-104°F), tiredness or lack of energy, sneezing, coughing, poor appetite, or runny eyes. If you see any of these side effects, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Drug & Food Interactions

There are no known contraindications to the use of Atopica.

Precautions

The safety and effectiveness of Atopica has not been established in dogs less than 6 months of age or less than 4 pounds of body weight. It is not for use in breeding dogs, pregnant or lactating females.

Instructions
Recommended Dosage

Give Atopica as directed by your veterinarian, as your dog's dose may be reduced after weeks of treatment. It's to be fed without food, preferably 1-2 hours before meals. Don't open the capsule to sprinkle over food; there will be a bitter taste unappealing to your dog. Keep capsules in the blister pack until you are ready to use them. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. Do not double dose.

Storage Instructions

Atopica should be stored and dispensed in the original unit-dose container at controlled room temperature between 59° - 77°F.

FAQ

What is Atopica?

Atopica is an FDA approved capsule that is often prescribed by veterinarians in order to treat atopic dermatitis (allergies) and related symptoms that result from common allergens such dust mites, pollen, and molds. Atopica can also be effective in treating related skin conditions.

How is this medication given?

Ideally, Atopica should be given 1-2 hours before meals and without food. Do not open capsules and do not sprinkle contents on food. Follow the exact directions set forth by your veterinarian. Your dogs dose may be reduced by your veterinarian after several weeks of treatment. Start Atopica 1-2 months before your dogs allergy season if his/her problems are seasonal in nature. Do not remove each capsule from the blister pack until you are ready to use it.

How does this medication work?

Atopica fights the underlying cause of skin allergies and related skin conditions by targeting the immune cells involved in an allergic reaction.

What results can I expect?

Your dogs allergy symptoms should be reduced which should result in your dog feeling better. His/her skin should start to look less inflamed and he/she should itch less which should result in less skin lesions. You will need to be patient. Results are not immediate and it may take several weeks for you to notice a difference. Results will vary from patient to patient.

When should this medication not be used or be used very carefully?

No drug is 100% safe in all patients, but your veterinarian will discuss with you any specific concerns about using this drug in your animal. This drug SHOULD NOT be used in dogs: That are allergic to it; With suspected cancer or a history of cancer.

This drug should be used WITH CAUTION in dogs: That have an infection; With liver or kidney disease; That are pregnant or nursing; With a seizure disorder (eg, epilepsy); That are under 4 lb (2 kg) body weight or younger than 6 months old.

If your animal has any of these conditions, talk to your veterinarian about the potential risks versus benefits.

    Very disappointed in customer service

    By on

The request for authorization of my dogs prescription did not reach my vet for 4 days after placing my order. Upon calling customer service to inquire about the delay the Chewy representative told me that their fax requests sometimes drop out of their system. I was assured the prescription would go out as soon as Chewy received authorization, which they confirmed arrived at noon on the 5th day after placing my order. However, the order didn’t go out as promised on the 5th day so I called back again for the 3rd time, and was informed that the order hadn’t been processed yet but would for sure go out later that day (6th day). By this time my dog had missed 3 days of her medicine for her autoimmune disorder. I will consider carefully before using Chewy for time sensitive orders in the future. … more

    Smooth and Safe

    By on

It’s difficult to compliment or review a drug prescribed by a Vet but I can certainly say the process to order was terrific and hassle free. PLUS, I trust Chewy to supply and ship a well cared for drug. When ordering something on-line that requires extra steps and the supplier manages those “extra steps” ... it’s a wonderful thing.

Great for medications in a timely manner

    By on

I’m happy with the medication and service, but I have to tell you I was not happy with her birthday box. She won’t eat the salmon treat and I don’t blame her. They stink. She doesn’t like the other treat either. Not sure the box was worth what it cost. Sorry

    Great Service, better price

    By on

Atopica is expensive and I need both 100mg and 25mg as a single dose. Chewy had a competitive price and they contacted the Vet dermatologist for approval to fill Rx. Happy with Chewy but not sure yet if Atopica is working for my allergy ridden dog. It takes a few weeks to know if it's having an effect and each box of Rx only covers two weeks. This means I'll be ordering the Rx often.

    Good medication, but expensive....

    By on

Atopica is definitely a good medication; got my boy's skin back into shape. He handled it well, with no side effects. The cost is the killer. My boy has to be on this every day for the rest of his life...autoimmune issue. At almost $200.00 per month, that's a chunk! The manufacturer had a rebate on it; then stopped. I wish they would do something about the cost. I love my boy and will do what I have too. However, some may not be in the same position; that's the shame of it all.
