Most cats react to catnip toys by rolling around with them and becoming very playful, while other cats may become more relaxed than rowdy. Some cats have no reaction to catnip at all, and still others may become hyperactive or even a little aggressive. A majority of cats, however, experience a mild and pleasant euphoric feeling after exposure to catnip or catnip-containing toys.
Catnip can last in a cat toy for a long time, but it will depend on things like how much catnip the toy contains, whether it's sprayed on or stuffed inside, how you store it, and how frequently your cat uses it. Many people like to keep extra loose catnip on hand for refilling refillable catnip toys or sprinkling onto regular ones.
Cats should play with catnip toys as often as they like, although being exposed to catnip frequently may cause cats to react to it less or lose interest. Some experts recommend only giving your cat toys with catnip only once a week and limiting playtime to 15 minutes to prevent habituation. Many catnip toys do not contain large amounts of catnip, however, so you may be able to leave those toys out without the risk of desensitization.
The best catnip toys are those that get your kitty revved up and playing happily. Catnip-stuffed toys tend to pack the biggest catnip punch, and cats only need to play with those for a limited time to feel a noticeable effect. Toys with just a little catnip or a catnip scent can lend a fun aspect to play without making your cat go totally wild. Try a few different types of catnip toys and see which work best for your cat.
