Dogs may need coats or jackets if it is very cold outside. Dogs with thinner coats and those who are older or ailing may benefit from wearing a coat or jacket during cooler weather, but thicker-coated dogs can usually tolerate cold weather without outerwear. Rain jackets can be very helpful during walks in inclement weather, as well. And, of course, dog coats and jackets can be cute and stylish choices that get your dog lots of attention and petting when he’s out! Just remember to always keep an eye on your dog whenever you dress him in clothing and watch for signs of distress or overheating.
A dog coat or jacket should fit snugly without being too tight or too loose. A good rule of thumb is that the garment should allow enough room for two fingers to fit underneath. Your dog should also be able to move freely and without tripping over any parts of the coat or jacket. A full coverage jacket should extend from the base of the collar to the tail, with either full or partial coverage of the belly. Follow sizing recommendations and always remember to measure your pet for the perfect fit.
Measure your dog for a coat or jacket by getting your dog’s neck girth, chest girth and back measurements. Measure neck girth by positioning a tape measure around your dog’s neck right where he would wear a collar, remembering to leave it loose enough that you can fit two fingers under the tape. Do the same thing around the largest part of the chest, using the two-finger technique as before. The back, or topline, measurement is the length from the base of the neck to where the tail begins. Match your dog’s measurements to the sizing guide for the jacket or coat you are considering. Always size up if your dog is in between sizes, and make sure any clothing is neither too tight nor too loose.
