Keep your rat healthy and properly nourished by feeding him a complete rat food diet along with fresh fruits and veggies every day. Chewy carries many types of pet rat food, including rat food pellets, rat food mixes, and rat hay for occasional snacking. You can find lots of different rodent diet formulas and brands in our online store.
Rats are naturally omnivores, so you'll want to provide a balanced diet with good levels of protein, moderate fat and carbs, plus vitamins and minerals to keep your pet healthy. Most packaged pet rat food contains these essentials in the right quantities, but you should also supplement packaged food with lots of fresh fruits and veggies every day. Some people like to feed their rats seed and grain mix rat food formulas, but these can be high in fat and sugar, and rats will sometimes pick out the tastiest bits and leave the rest.
Some of the best rat food comes in pellet, kibble or block form, avoiding this problem and ensuring your rat eats a complete and balanced diet. While you should supplement dry rat kibble with fresh food, avoid feeding your rat human foods that may not be good for him. Things like blue cheese, red cabbage, brussels sprouts, mango, avocado, raw beans and peanuts may cause allergies or stomach upsets in your pet, and sticky foods like peanut butter can present a choking hazard. Stick to food and treats made especially for rats and healthy fruits and veggies like apples, broccoli, carrots, peas and bananas instead.
In addition to quality rat food and fresh fruits and veggies, giving rat treats in moderation will help make your rat happy. Rat treats work as a training incentive, too, and they can help you teach your rat a variety of good habits and tricks. Feed your pet rats once or twice a day if they're adults and two to three times a day if they're still babies. Feed between 12 and 20 grams of dry pellets a day per rat; quantities will depend on your rats' size as well as what type of food you're feeding, so check the bag for guidance. Feeding fresh fruit and veggie snacks daily will add healthy variety to their diet and occasional rat treats a couple of times a week will make them very happy, too.
Pet rats usually eat pelleted or block food formulas supplemented with fresh fruit and veggies. You can find many foods made for both rats and mice, or choose one that's made especially for rats, since they have slightly different dietary needs. Rodent food mixes with grains and seeds are also available, but these can sometimes be high in sugar and fat and cause weight gain. Pellets and cubes with a protein content of at least 16% and a fat content between 4 and 5% are best for rats.
