The best cat leashes are durable and easy to attach to your preferred cat harness. Look for lightweight leashes 4-6 feet in length. You will want a cat leash that is easy to clean, with sturdy hardware for safety and long use. Choose a leash that gives you a good grip and make sure it feels comfortable to hold, as well.
Some cats like leashes if they are gradually introduced to them and trained properly. Other cats do not like leashes at all. Start slowly, reward your cat with treats and respect her wishes if she finds walking on a leash too stressful.
Train your cat to use a leash gradually. Get your cat used to wearing a harness first, introducing it slowly and leaving it on for short to increasingly longer periods of time as your cat gets acclimated. Treats will help with all stages of the training process. Once your cat is used to wearing the harness, clip on the leash indoors and let her gradually get used to walking with it. You can later repeat the process outdoors, taking great care not to go too fast or put your cat in dangerous situations. Talk to your vet for tips on leash training or look for online videos for additional help.
Start leash training a cat when she is young, if possible, as older cats may be harder to train. You can usually start training kittens on a leash when they are as young as 8 weeks old. Discuss leash training with your vet before you begin and be sure to do everything correctly and safely. Go slow and encourage your cat with praise and treats to reduce stress and increase your chances of success.
