Very interesting, stress-free and easy to do, this test answered many questions I have had about my cat's unique coloration and size, also gives peace of mind by screening for genetic health conditions.
I was so excited to try out these kits so I could potentially learn more about my cats and provide more personalized care. Unfortunately, these tests don't really tell you anything about your cat. They prepare reports in a way that basically let's the pet owner decide the mix of breeds. They tested for some health & genetic traits, but gave extremely limited information. Really disappointed considering the cost of this service. The only bonus was the great customer service. I'm really sad that I literally paid $225 to learn absolutely nothing about my cats.
It's been 4 months since we submitted our cat's sample. They notified us 2 weeks ago that they could not find enough DNA and were sending a new kit. According to USPS tracking it was just shipped yesterday. This is ridiculous. Stay away from these con artists.
I’m so glad there’s a DNA test for cats now! This was so awesome & informative. Definitely worth the money & very accurate! Took a little longer than expected to get results but they emailed me to let me know & I got them a week later. I now know what breed my kitty is & I love that I was able to find out!
This is the second Basepaws Catkit we've purchased. We loved learning more about our cat and had to get one for our second cat. Collection is easy and painless, instructions are easy to follow, and you simply register your kit and drop it in the mailbox. Results are quick (considering it is DNA analysis) and reports are informative and easy to read. The best part, they are continuing to expand their database, so you can expect to learn even more about your beloved friend overtime. HIGHLY RECOMMEND for cat lovers!
I have a special needs kitten with undiagnosed issues. While the test did not identify anything either, it gave me peace of mind that there was not something I could easily diagnose and treat. He is just a special little guy. Give it a try!
We adopted a cat from an animal shelter (for our daughter) and from the moment we took him home we knew he was special. For a Christmas present for our daughter and the kitty (Comet) we ordered a Basepaws testing kit. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pretty surprised. On Christmas Day we registered the kit and swabbed Comet's mouth which wasn't nearly as bad as I anticipated it being. I did it a few times to be sure we got some good cells and sent it off. Within a couple of weeks we got an email that his DNA was accepted. (Whew! A hurdle down.) After about 8 weeks (they say 6-9 weeks) we received our results. It was 18 pages of fun facts and information about Comet and the cats he's most closely related to. While I was waiting I did some research on Basepaws and saw that some folks results noted a significant portion of their cat as a "polycat." Luckily for us (or maybe because their database has grown overtime) they were able to tell us about 76% of his DNA ancestry. Overall, we were pleased to know that Comet was in fact a special kitty with a lot of cool cat DNA in him. The health genetic markers were nice (we had a previous cat pass away 6 months after adoption). Our daughter spent several hours reading the report and highlighting things about her Comet. With the information we got, I don't hesitate to say go for it.
I rescued my 3 loving cats (they are litter mates and all very different) and have always been curious to understand them better- such as the breeds they are most similar to as well as any additional health insights available to provide them with the best lives possible. Stoked when I found Basepaws! Also - loved seeing them Shark Tank :) The cheek swab was really easy to use and the results came in about 7 weeks, with great communication touch points from Basepaws along the way, including when the swabs had been received and when the tests were underway. The reports are fascinating! Results include a breed analysis and genetic health markers. I am very pleased with the entire experience and am happy to recommend Basepaws CAT DNA tests if you want to learn more about your cat including the valuable health report that my veterinarian also enjoyed!
My mom got me the dna test as a Christmas gift, knowing how obsessed I am with my fur child. The swab was like a very sturdy q-tip which Kenda didn’t mind at all. It took around two months to process which was actually quicker than I expected considering how new cat dna testing is. I had gotten my cat from a shelter and he’s a gorgeous fluffy cat that I assumed made him part Maine Coon. Turns out he’s more of a Norwegian forest cat! It was great to get all the health information as well!
I have 3 rescues and Basepaws gave me terrific glimpses at their breed backgrounds. The additional genetic information on potential genetic disorders gave me peace of mind that none of my cats have any genetic mutations. The only drawback of this test is the size of the swab used for sample collection; with a non-cooperative cat it is difficult to insert the swab to collect saliva.
