FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

Food works despite issues with blue buffalo

By teddy on Aug 26, 2020

My dog had severe issues he had a very serious operation for telescoping intestines a few years ago. He has been on various prescription and regular foods and home cooked. After much trial and error - he was on Hills prescription originally I have come up with a combo for this food that works. He gets a 1/4- 1/2 cup of theGI dry soaked in water and approx half a can of the blue buffalo GI canned at each meal.He gets very few treats and for the most part this works and sometimes he can have a bit of chicken egg or salmon added as a treat. What I didnt like about blue buffalo is that during the quarantine I had a problem with a bag of the dry food.Because I dont feed large quantities of the dry I My dog had severe issues he had a very serious operation for telescoping intestines a few years ago. My search is over!

By Becca on Jul 7, 2020

My pit mix has an incredibly sensitive tummy. After she was about 2, I took her to the vet and she was placed on a prescription dog food. Well, that food was discontinued, so my vet put her on a new Rx food. That was a disaster and she was tossing her cookies all of the time. After trying half a dozen foods, I finally gave up and started cooking her chicken & veggies. I did this for a few years until COVID hoarding forced grocery stores to put a limit on how much meat you could buy. A friend of mine suggested this food and wow, I am so grateful. We have been using this food for 3 days and it doesn’t irritate her stomach at all. She also really likes it because she is gladly going to her bowl My pit mix has an incredibly sensitive tummy. Dry Food - Better than Hill's

By DanK on Jun 22, 2020

Similar to someone else's review, my pup is also a picky eater on top of him having gastro problems. We tried Hill's Science Diet first, but he didn't like it much. My vet also suggested Blue Buffalo GI, and he loves it

My poor Lab had an extensive surgery and afterwards she continually had diarrhea. I DID NOT want to give her Hills because of the ingredients but one very sweet and knowledgeable Chewy expert recommended Blue Buffalo ID. PERFECT!!!!

    Blue Buffalo dry food

By Vanessa on Feb 8, 2020

I have a picky eater on top of him having gut issues. Tried several brands of food before my vet suggested Blue Buffalo GI. He loves it, eats his bowl every morning. He also eats the wet food at night, which he loves.

    Great for GI issues

    By KiKi55 on Feb 17, 2020

I honestly gave this only 4 starts because it's too soon to really know how well it works. So far, the dogs love it and if it works, it'll be 5 stars!

working well :) I am happy

By Rose on Dec 7, 2019

Sam likes and enjoys this food well. He doesn't like the little small hard black life vitamin pellets in the food because they are tough for him to chew. They get stuck in his teeth that are getting sensitive due to age.. so he spits out just under 1/3rd of the life vitamin pellets over the floor. However the food is working really well for his GI support, so that in itself is awesome. I am very happy with this food for him. (one suggestion make the black vitamin pellets larger, softer, chewier.)

Great “Natural” food for dogs with GI disorders.

By Rosy on May 26, 2019

This dry dog food has been the only one that has natural ingredients. After Hills Prescription Diet I/D Natural dog food was discontinued back in September of 2018, this new formula by Blue Buffalo was the only one that came close. I am still transitioning my dog to this food but so far so good. I hope that Blue Buffalo does not discontinue it.
