FAQ

Why should I buy Veterinary Diets online?

Shopping for Veterinary Diets is easy! Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer your questions and guide you through the process. We offer competitive prices, free shipping on orders over $49, and more savings if you sign up for an Autoship subscription.

How do I order Veterinary Diets?

  1. Search our website for the diet your vet recommends, then add it to your cart. You can purchase your Veterinary Diets with any other goodies you need!
  2. At checkout, you’ll be asked for required information. Enter your pet’s name and your vet’s name & telephone number.
  3. Place your order, and we’ll take care of the rest!

How will you contact my vet?

Our Veterinary Diets team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately.

Does it help if I send you my veterinarian’s authorization?

Yes! If you have a paper copy of your vet’s authorization, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax it to 1-800-619-7973.

Can I use a veterinarian’s authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state?

Of course! We can accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States and Canada—that includes US territories, like Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian’s authorization?

Veterinary Diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. If you don’t have a paper authorization, no sweat—once you provide your vet’s information, our team will take over.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we’ll need them to provide us with the full name of the pet’s owner’s name via phone, email or chat after the order is placed, so the clinic can locate your pet’s records when we contact them.

How can I help expedite my order?

Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Create your pet’s profile on Chewy.com.
  2. If you have an Autoship scheduled, but you’re running low on your Veterinary Diets, contact us ahead of time to let us know if you have a new clinic or if any authorization information has changed.
  3. If you have an authorization handy, send it to us before you order—by sending an email to vetdiet@chewy.com, starting a chat with one of our experts, or faxing us at 1-800-619-7973.

Do I need to set up a pet profile?

We recommend it, but it’s not required. You can create your pet’s profile by logging in at Chewy.com, hovering over your account, and choosing “pet profile.”

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your vet will tell us when your authorization will expire and how many times we can send before they’d like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills?

Yep! Sign up for Autoship and we’ll automatically ship your Veterinary Diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills, or your authorization expires, we’ll automatically contact your vet for a new authorization. If we hit any bumps in the road, we’ll let you know right away.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the Veterinary Diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We’re here for you 24/7.

About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

Tasty solution for GSD w EPI

    By on

Our wonderful GSD Sasha developed EPI @ 2 yo. She wasted terribly, and she's still on an HP diet. After finding the right enzyme supplement, probiotics and vitamins, she gained back all of her weight and muscle, but she became very, very picky about eating. Our vet sells Royal Canin HP, and our university vet gave us some Purina HA. She eventually refused both of these. (Main ingredients like corn may have had something to do with this?) We gradually added this BB HF and are now switching over to it. It seems to be tastier than the others, plus the main ingredient is hydrolyzed salmon... So far, so good.

I had been on the hunt for a prescription formula for my nearly 10-year-old Standard Schnauzer with urate stones. We first tried a Hill's prescription food that had her in a chronic state of diarrhea for 4 weeks. Having fed her Blue Buffalo chicken and rice and then lamb and brown rice for the past 8 yrs., I asked her vet. to approve a Blue Buffalo formula. After my dog's vet spoke with a Blue Buffalo consultant, they agreed on the HF formula for my pup. My dog seems to like the food, not love it, but she empties her bowl every night. The diarrhea stopped after the 2nd feeding. I cannot speak to the effect on her urate stones since she has only been on this formula for two weeks but I have I had been on the hunt for a prescription formula for my nearly 10-year-old Standard Schnauzer with urate stones. Hydrolyzed dog food

    By on

Previously, my dog was prescribed for Royal Canyn’s Hydrolyzed dog food that contains chicken. However, Blue baffalo’s hydrolyzef dog food with salmon works much better for my dog: no extra tear stains and his coat got softer.

Worked for dog with digestion issues

    By on

Ever since our Aussie pup came home she had bouts of loose stools and vomiting. Over the course of a year the Vet ran a battery of tests which were inconclusive. Finally she said our dog would always have digestion issues due to size of her liver. She was put on Royal Canin Hydrolized protein which is a soy based product. It worked well but I really wasn’t thrilled about the soy. When this food came out we gave it a try. Both my Aussies love it! We transitioned from the other brand over a month as not to upset our girls’ stomachs. They’ve been on it about 6 months. Their coats are so shiny and healthy, they love the food and Chewy delivers it right to the door.
