FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

    my dog loves this food

    By on

my dog has been getting bladder stones. she's had two operations to remove them. the vet has started her on this food and so far so good. my dog LOVES to eat and this is the only thing she is allowed, so i put a few cups of this dog food in a big bowl and mix it with boiling water and let it set to soften and cool and put it in the fridge, and use it as her breakfast and her treats, while we leave a bowl of hard food out for her during the day. she has lost two pounds and is still able to have her "treats".

    The pounds come off!

    By on

Our 3-year old Lab was getting overweight despite plenty of exercise and the vet recommended this food. In 6 weeks, he's lost 5 pounds with this being the only change to his diet. He loves it and we're very happy with the results. Chewy contacted the vet directly for authorization since a prescription is required. Very convenient!

    Prescription Dog Food

    By on

This review is based on Hobey's inhalation of his new prescription dog food. Due to a recurrent urinary tract infection this winter, our Vet recommended this food to help with his condition. Being a Lab, food is paramount to him!! It is also supposed to assist with weight loss; the verdict is not in yet on that issue.....

Easy Transition and he loves it

    By on

We switched our Cushing’s boy from the Prescription Diet food to this one as Blue Buffalo cooks their food at lower temps which is so much better for the pups. It was an easy transition! No upset stomach and he gobbles it right up! We also love that it helps control weight because it’s essential for his Cushing’s and our boy loves to eat!

    She loves it!

    By on

Loves the food and it makes her stools firmer which was a problem. Too early to tell if she is losing weight. Good to see they make it for urinary and wt loss. She’s been on the urinary for a long time.

    Check the Date of Expiry

    By on

I bought this food 4 times, and 2 of them the food came with less of two months before the date of expiry. Please, be careful with your dogs, the smell of the food and color is totally different. I had to talk with chewy customer service and wait for a new bag. My dog likes it more or less, but it is not working for Weight management. My dog is 4.5 pounds and this food has the range of proportion wide, like from 1 to 15 pounds dogs. I feed my dog with the minimum but she is gained weight.

    Has helped my dog

    By on

My rescue bulldog had issues with intestinal motility and chronic uti's due to a birth defect and this food was recommended to me by the rescue group. Since I started feeding it, he has not had issues with constipation and has not had a uti for over 3 years. He is also on a daily cranberry supplement but I truly believe this food has helped with the uti's. The rescue group uses it for all their dogs with urinary tract infections as well. And, he really likes the food too.
