FAQ

Why should I buy Veterinary Diets online?

Shopping for Veterinary Diets is easy! Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer your questions and guide you through the process. We offer competitive prices, free shipping on orders over $49, and more savings if you sign up for an Autoship subscription.

How do I order Veterinary Diets?

  1. Search our website for the diet your vet recommends, then add it to your cart. You can purchase your Veterinary Diets with any other goodies you need!
  2. At checkout, you’ll be asked for required information. Enter your pet’s name and your vet’s name & telephone number.
  3. Place your order, and we’ll take care of the rest!

How will you contact my vet?

Our Veterinary Diets team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately.

Does it help if I send you my veterinarian’s authorization?

Yes! If you have a paper copy of your vet’s authorization, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax it to 1-800-619-7973.

Can I use a veterinarian’s authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state?

Of course! We can accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States and Canada—that includes US territories, like Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian’s authorization?

Veterinary Diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. If you don’t have a paper authorization, no sweat—once you provide your vet’s information, our team will take over.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we’ll need them to provide us with the full name of the pet’s owner’s name via phone, email or chat after the order is placed, so the clinic can locate your pet’s records when we contact them.

How can I help expedite my order?

Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Create your pet’s profile on Chewy.com.
  2. If you have an Autoship scheduled, but you’re running low on your Veterinary Diets, contact us ahead of time to let us know if you have a new clinic or if any authorization information has changed.
  3. If you have an authorization handy, send it to us before you order—by sending an email to vetdiet@chewy.com, starting a chat with one of our experts, or faxing us at 1-800-619-7973.

Do I need to set up a pet profile?

We recommend it, but it’s not required. You can create your pet’s profile by logging in at Chewy.com, hovering over your account, and choosing “pet profile.”

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your vet will tell us when your authorization will expire and how many times we can send before they’d like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills?

Yep! Sign up for Autoship and we’ll automatically ship your Veterinary Diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills, or your authorization expires, we’ll automatically contact your vet for a new authorization. If we hit any bumps in the road, we’ll let you know right away.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the Veterinary Diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We’re here for you 24/7.

About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

My picky Ginger loves this dry Kidney RX food

    By on

Ginger has both kidney disease and diabetes. Although she eats her RX wet food for kidney disease, we had a hard time finding her a dry food she would eat. We had tried four others with no success. She would not eat three of them at all. She ate the fourth one for about a week before she started refusing it. We decided to try the Blue Buffalo as a last resort. And we are glad we did because so far she loves it. It has been about 2 weeks and she get excited when we put some in her bowl in the evening.

My cat with Kidney issues loves it!

    By on

I have a cat with kidney issues. Previously he was on grain free food due to suspected grain allergy tho it was never confirmed - but his symptoms went away on grain free food so I figured that was the issue. Vet recommended another name brand food for kidney issues that was not grain free - he said grain allergies are rare. It was the only Prescription food my vet carried, so I had no choice at the time. My cat was less than thrilled about eating it, then got very itchy and was clawing his ears to pieces. Switched to this grain free Blue Buffalo kidney food after convincing the vet the cat might actually be allergic to grains - problem resolved and my cat also LOVES this food. Taste tests choose this kibble

    By on

My kitty has always favored kibble. She’s been eating Blue Buffalo Sensitive Stomach for years. But after being diagnosed with kidney failure I had to find renal food with low phosphorus, high moisture, etc. I tried several brands and my kitty settled on Blue Buffalo Kidney and Mobility. Makes me happy she loves her new kibble! I hope it helps her stay healthier for many years to come!

    Something good to eat!

    By on

My elderly CKD cat is a picky eater, who mostly eats wet food. Still, she sometimes wants a bit of crunchy food, so I always keep a little available. I've given her 4 other types of kidney dry food to no avail. Here is one that she will eat, if or when she's in the mood. And I can feel good that she's finally eating something that's good for her.

    They like it!

    By on

I've fed my cats regular Blue Buffalo for years, since I've brought them home, had to change to a prescription diet for one because the veterinarian suggested it due to possible chronic kidney disease. I've slowly transitioned them, over 7 days, adding a little more every 3 days, they seem to like it just as well as there normal food!

    Loved by Picky Maine Coon

    By on

We tried feeding our very picky 15 year old Maine Coon many different kidney diet wet and dry foods. Dry K+M is the only kidney diet food that she will eat. We are grateful this product exists.

    Picky Kitty Power Chows!

    By on

I have a very picky senior cat with kidney disease. She loves this food and gobbles it down. The glucosamine has brought back her bouncy friskiness. I am so glad that I took a chance on this product, and if you have a picky senior cat you might want to give it a whirl.
