FAQ

Why should I buy Veterinary Diets online?

Shopping for Veterinary Diets is easy! Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer your questions and guide you through the process. We offer competitive prices, free shipping on orders over $49, and more savings if you sign up for an Autoship subscription.

How do I order Veterinary Diets?

  1. Search our website for the diet your vet recommends, then add it to your cart. You can purchase your Veterinary Diets with any other goodies you need!
  2. At checkout, you’ll be asked for required information. Enter your pet’s name and your vet’s name & telephone number.
  3. Place your order, and we’ll take care of the rest!

How will you contact my vet?

Our Veterinary Diets team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately.

Does it help if I send you my veterinarian’s authorization?

Yes! If you have a paper copy of your vet’s authorization, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax it to 1-800-619-7973.

Can I use a veterinarian’s authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state?

Of course! We can accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States and Canada—that includes US territories, like Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian’s authorization?

Veterinary Diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. If you don’t have a paper authorization, no sweat—once you provide your vet’s information, our team will take over.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we’ll need them to provide us with the full name of the pet’s owner’s name via phone, email or chat after the order is placed, so the clinic can locate your pet’s records when we contact them.

How can I help expedite my order?

Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Create your pet’s profile on Chewy.com.
  2. If you have an Autoship scheduled, but you’re running low on your Veterinary Diets, contact us ahead of time to let us know if you have a new clinic or if any authorization information has changed.
  3. If you have an authorization handy, send it to us before you order—by sending an email to vetdiet@chewy.com, starting a chat with one of our experts, or faxing us at 1-800-619-7973.

Do I need to set up a pet profile?

We recommend it, but it’s not required. You can create your pet’s profile by logging in at Chewy.com, hovering over your account, and choosing “pet profile.”

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your vet will tell us when your authorization will expire and how many times we can send before they’d like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills?

Yep! Sign up for Autoship and we’ll automatically ship your Veterinary Diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills, or your authorization expires, we’ll automatically contact your vet for a new authorization. If we hit any bumps in the road, we’ll let you know right away.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the Veterinary Diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We’re here for you 24/7.

About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

    Finicky cat won't eat it

    By on

My cat is extremely finicky, and I've tried most major high quality normal foods and he rejects them. Since his diagnosis with Chronic Kidney Disease, I've tried this and one other brand, tried warming the can in warm water, put tuna juice and canned cooked chicken broth on it, did the 25% new with 75% old....no matter what, he walks away from it. He loves the Blue Buffalo dry version of this, so I thought he would like this also, but he won't eat it. He has been fed Blue Buffalo as his normal diet for years, and they are a great company...but this product was not appealing to him. I gave the case of this and the other brand to my veterinarian to give to someone in need. palatable?

    By on

My vet recommended we try this food as she heard about it at a conference and said it was touted as being "very palatable." Our CKD kitty likes Blue Buffalo chicken, duck and salmon. She will not touch this stuff. None of our cats will. The texture is very dry, like a loaf. Why on earth would you create something like that for cats who are struggling to eat? They like gravy, moisture, smooth textures. Now I have spent $60 on food no cat will eat. I don't know why it is so difficult to make kidney diets that taste good but it must be a real struggle. Royal Canin kidney-A is the best on the market. My cat will eat that occasionally. Blue with my blue purchase

    By on

I have used regular adult Blue Buffalo cat food for years with my adult cats and they enjoyed both the wet and dry food. Now that I have senior cats at 16 and 17 years old with arthritis and CKD (both extremely common in senior cats which are increasing) I was excited to see that Blue offered a kidney and mobility friendly wet food. However upon its arrival we were disappointed as the food is super firm, my cats can’t eat it bc the consistency is pretty solid and there is no liquid gravy to attract or help them to eat it. The age of cats using this should be considered and the consistency fixed so it is softer and with gravy for senior cats as other brands are much softer. Pleasantly surprised with results

My 16yr old Maine Coon entered Stage I kidney failure and vet prescribed a renal diet. Since my cat had been eating a grain-free diet most of it's life, I decided to try the Blue Buffalo natural diet. Of course, from reading reviews of all types of renal diet food, I was not expecting tremendous success, if any at all. To my surprise, my kitty took to the food right away and even lets me know when he's hungry for more. My biggest 'problem' with the new diet is keeping his kitty siblings away from the food - they like it too! The smell reminds me of sweet potatoes, the texture is 'jelly/rubbery' different than regular pate and I cut it up into bits. Disappointed

    By on

I was at first excited about buying a good grain free kidney prescription food. However it is very thick, dry and pasty. I blend a small amount with other prescription food with water and warm it up. Our cat will eat it this way. So it takes some work. If you have that kind of time then buy it. If not then this may not be a wise choice. I am also hoping that BB offers this in smaller can size. I’m wasting some because I won’t keep a can more than two days.

cat with kidney failure won't eat

    By on

I have tried every (and I do mean every) canned cat food for cats with kidney failure. I gave this 2 stars because my cat ate a few bites. That is the best so far. My cat is picking at the dry food but with kidney failure he needs a canned food too. He has been keeping his weight except for this last vet visit when he lost a little. This food was my last hope. You would think my cat would like the most expensive, but noooo.

my cat licks the outside of the bowl clean

    By on

My cat suffers from a liver shunt and has to eat a low protein diet. They don't make food for liver shunts so we have to use kidney diets. This diet is amazing. Nellie is a picky eater however with this food she not only licks the inside of her bowl clean she does the outside too!!!!!!! I think that says it all!!!!!
