FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

    Disappointed

By Setterhome on Dec 8, 2020

Vet prescribed and first case I purchased from Vet. Content was firm, with sufficient juices, and slide out of can fully intact. Ordered 12 cans from Chewy, and the content was mushy, with little juices, and blopped out of the can. Please note: the food was still good. However, it may have been stored improperly. I did order 2 more cases from Chewy and I am hoping the first case was a fluke and that these 2 cases are in the correct condition.

    Just what Lola needed

By Lola on Jul 28, 2020

Vet put my dog on a prescription food. The first one I ordered from Chewy, Lola would not eat. Without any problems, I ordered another brand. I ordered Blue Buffalo and Lola likes it. Thank you Chewy!

By Mojo on Dec 14, 2019

My little 2-year old Havanese has a very sensitive gastrointestinal system. I finally found a dog food that she can eat without vomiting or having diarrhea. I mix it with some chopped baked chicken breast and she loves it.

    so far so good

My 31/2 year old dog has had severe gastro issues and a major operation he had a telescoping of the intestines when he was a year old.He chewed wood and plastic so it is unknown what caused it but that definitely contributed. He has a very sensitive stomach and has been living on Hills ID stew with some eggs or sardines or turkey added occassionaly. He did not do well with their dry ID food so he was eating 2 cans a day which is expensive and messy and he was never full( he is a 28-30 lb english cocker)He started having accidents in the apt.at night every few weeks I was afraid he had an underlying condition( like Addisons) .The vet suggested we try this food I did it very slowly and it has My 31/2 year old dog has had severe gastro issues and a major operation he had a telescoping of the intestines when he was a year old.He chewed wood and plastic so it is unknown what caused it but that definitely contributed. He has a very sensitive stomach and has been living on Hills ID stew with some eggs or sardines or turkey added occassionaly. He did not do well with their dry ID food so he was eating 2 cans a day which is expensive and messy and he was never full( he is a 28-30 lb english cocker)He started having accidents in the apt.at night every few weeks I was afraid he had an underlying condition( like Addisons) .The vet suggested we try this food I did it very slowly and it has not been a perfect transition I am still combining a little ID .TheBlue Buffalo dry food says to transition for 2 weeks and we are trying to do that very slowly .He seems better on it he loves it but he also liked the ID so that is not an issue.I do not know yet as we have not fully transitioned but I am not mopping the floor every morning so that is a big help.I hope it works and my other hope is that day he can transition to a regular food( with lower fat and protein). The fat and protein are important many foods have very high levels of protein and fat and as a puppy( before his illness) he had problems digesting the "premium" foods- I tried several and I wish I had continued to feed him what the breeder fed him which was Iams a food that probably wasn't as rich as the premium foods and easier to digest.Dont fall for all the advertising is the lesson I learned. … more

    Dependable and affordable

By Chris on Aug 19, 2019

A few weeks after one of my dogs had her spleen removed and her intestines resectioned, she was hospitalized with a major bout of gastroenteritis. She'll be on Blue GI Veterinary Diet for the rest of her life so it's great to have it delivered on a regular, dependable schedule. One less thing to worry about, thanks to Chewy.
