Description

Help your sensitive cat get the nutrition she needs and the taste she loves with Blue Buffalo’s NP Novel Protein Alligator Cat Food. Some cats negatively react to common proteins, which can lead to issues like skin irritation and digestion problems. This Blue Buffalo recipe is specially formulated to help manage those issues and minimize reactions. It’s crafted with real alligator, which is rarely linked to food intolerances in cats, and it’s the only source of animal protein in this kitty kibble. This recipe also provides felines with omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and flaxseed to promote healthy skin and a lustrous coat. Plus, it’s made without grains, corn, wheat or soy and is rich in antioxidants to support a healthy immune system.

Key Benefits
  • Formulated to help minimize negative reactions to food with alligator—a unique protein source that is rarely linked to food intolerance in cats.
  • Fish oil and flaxseed provide healthy sources of omega-3 fatty acids to support your cat’s skin and coat health.
  • Crafted with vitamins and antioxidants, plus blueberries and cranberries to support healthy immunity.
  • Grain-free recipe made without corn, wheat or soy for cats with food sensitivities.
  • This veterinary diet is made without grains, corn, wheat, soy, artificial flavors or preservatives and no chicken or poultry by-product meals.

Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow a 7 to 14-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. For a 14-day transition plan, start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Days 1-4. On Days 5-8, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Days 9-11, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Days 12-14, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

    disappointed

    By jag9 on Dec 1, 2021

I bought this expensive food for a stray cat I've been taking care of. I've tried every other food for her allergy problems. She won't even go near this food. Left it sit for a few days hoping she would start to nibble at it but she'd rather starve. I put it outside and the racoons wouldn't even eat it.

Finally! Our cat is thriving on Blue Novel Protein -- and loves it

By Sibyl on Jul 14, 2021

Our cat -- who seems to be allergic to nearly every cat food (including other novel-protein products we have tried, over the years) -- is thriving on Blue NP. No vomiting! She eagerly awaits the feeding bowl.

Tasty and just what the doctor ordered

By ChestersMom on Apr 22, 2021

We have been fans of Blue Buffalo for many years. One of our cats was recently diagnosed with IBD. The vet recommended putting him on a Novel Protein diet. Once again, we turned to Blue Buffalo. He has been on his new regimen for two weeks. He is eating both the wet and dry formulas of the NP diet. We are thrilled with his results so far. No more vomiting or diarrhea, and he is beginning to gain some weight. Best part? He absolutely LOVES the food and can't wait for his next meal! Thank you Blue and thank you Chewy for delivering the food so promptly.

Is she picky, or did the recipe/formula change?

By Disappointed on Jan 21, 2021

My cat ate this consistently for over a year (mixed with another brand's novel protein kibble) without issue. I received a new bag in Dec. 2020 and she will NOT touch it - she eats around it & knows the difference between the two brands/flavors. I've had to eliminate this from her kibble mix, which has been disappointing!

    Life changing for my Graham

By Lauren on Dec 6, 2020

My sister’s cat (we live together) Graham was throwing up nearly every other day on his old food (Iams - not a bad food, just not right for him!) The vomit was always comprised of just-eaten kibble. I noticed it when I moved in last year, but my sister was sure it was just because he ate too fast. Then, a month or two ago, we noticed it he was also coughing and sneezing all the time. Definitely vet time. The vet suspected allergies and prescribed this food for him. He’s been on the food for three weeks now and hasn’t vomited once since starting it. It’s amazing. I’ve never seen him go three days without vomiting, let alone three weeks! He’s stopped sneezing and coughing too. Knowing what we do now, we absolutely regret not taking Graham to the vet sooner. We feel awful about what he was going through. But we’re so glad the vet prescribed this food. And to those concerned with the price - trust us, it’s worth it. We’d pay $200 a bag if that’s what it takes to keep Graham’s tummy feeling better - and we’ve got five cats eating it. We go through a lot. If your vet prescribes this food, give it a shot. … more

    It's probably ok

By StaffToBootstheCat on Apr 17, 2020

Had the Blue Buffalo NP recommended by Boots' dermatology vet. He loved the dry food. Problem was his digestive tract didn't like the food. Had to stop and go back to his previous food after two days. Wish that Blue Buffalo offered smaller bags during food transition.

Great for food allergies that create mouth ulcers

By CatMom on Jan 19, 2020

My cat had terrible mouth ulcers caused by food allergies. This, along with steroids, helped it clear up. She loves this alligator kibble and will beg for it if I try to feed her a different novel protein (like rabbit). She is even gaining weight. Highly recommend it!
