Both types of diets can be a good fit. It just depends on the needs of your pet and your personal preference. Whole grains are complex carbohydrates that provide dogs with the energy they need to thrive. But if your pet has sensitivities to grains, you would want a grain-free option. Even Blue Buffalo’s diets with grains are made without corn or wheat — part of our True BLUE Promise. Instead, we use wholesome oats, barley, and brown rice. Both grains and grain-free carbohydrates are healthy and nutritious; we recommend talking with your veterinarian to decide which option is best for your pet.
While grains provide nutrition for pets, some people choose to avoid grains for various reasons. Grains are not common allergens in most dogs and cats, but if your pet is allergic to a specific grain or ingredient, you should avoid it. Blue Buffalo foods never contain corn, wheat or soy.
There are three main benefits of feeding grains:

My dog was eating the non-grain-free kibble before they consolidated the formulas, and she had zero problems with the reformulation. However, I switched food recently because the vet recommended that she should lose a little bit of weight, so do with that what you will. If she has problems with any other food formulas, I would definitely go back to this. Maybe just a little less than the recommended amount!
Just like many others have said my dogs have been eating this food for years and in hindsight since the formula change both of my dogs have had health issues that the vet could not figure out - horrible gas, diarrhea, blood in stools, vomiting. The issues resolved once changing foods. I feel bad that I didn’t realize it was likely the food sooner. My poor babies. Blue Buffalo has lost another customer.
I was feeding my chihuahua the grain-free version for so long but it's no longer available so I bought this "new recipe" back in June. We are on our second bag of the "new recipe" and think this is the culprit to all of her skin issues. She constantly scratches her throat until it's raw and can't be left unsupervised because she scratches so much. She scratches her back and around her ears so much that her hair has fallen out. Also, there are barely any "lifebits" in the new recipe. I thought my dog would be on this food for life and we found the one but NEXTTTTTTT!!!!!
This bag of food is very misleading. Our German Shepherd has a chicken allergy and we thought the salmon would be a good option. He had explosive diarrhea and we looked at the bag. Why does it say it’s not made with chicken but there is chicken in the ingredients list?! How on earth can you advertise this???
They changed the formula and my dog has also suddenly had severe digestive issues and we couldn’t get her to eat. I took her to the vet for this 3 times!! She was on all kinds of meds before the vet suggested that the food was the issue. After changing to a new food brand, no issues. Oh and also found several beetles in the last bag that I had. I am very disappointed, as I used this brand exclusively and raved them for years ,and will never purchase again!
They changed their recipe and it's TERRIBLE. My German Shepherd (Lilith) kept having diarrhea and stomach issues. My vet and I were at our wits end trying to figure out why, until we realized it was her food. She was to the point of not eating and loosing several pounds. DO NOT BUY.
Our rescue beagle-mix Daisy had difficulties with every food from the time we adopted her. Either stomach upset or diarrhea or simply not liking the taste of dozens of brands we tried. This food change all that- she loves it and has been eating it consistently for months. No digestive issues, shiny coat, and loads of energy. I am very thankful to see this little girl, who just didn't want to eat, finally eating!
My puppy Samoyed loved this food for months and then blue wilderness revamped their new formula, ever since then he’s had allergy issues one after another. The vet and I couldn’t figure it out, then I tried switching up his food to a more limited ingredient diet and bam, no more vomiting, diarrhea, reverse sneezing, hacking, or conjunctivitis. I’m waiting on results from the dermatologist for what he’s intolerant to exactly but regardless, I don’t know what blue wilderness did to their new formula but it ain’t good.
I have been feeding this brand to my dog for a couple of years now. They changed the recipe and like other reviewers have mentioned, my dog ended up with diarrhea, at one point going to the emergency vet because there was blood in her stool. I did not immediately associate it with this food, and obviously I can't say for sure that this is what caused it, but seeing similar stories from other people is enough for me to move away from the brand. It's unfortunate.
I have raised and shown herding breeds since 1989. I fed frozen foods, wet, and dry foods. I switched to Wilderness Salmon with Omega-3 and vitamins from Eukanuba lamb and rice, which was very popular with breeders at the time. I feel that because of the added nutrients, my Shelties and Miniature Australian Shepherds are more good natured an have coats with a beautiful sheen!
