Strong rubber smell

The mat is beautiful and colorful, but it has a very strong smell of rubber. I had the mat in my kitchen for two weeks until I finally put it in the garage because I couldn't stand the smell. It still smells almost two weeks later. I hope the smell eventually goes away. Also, I would have liked a thicker mat; but the picture is really why I bought it.
