Does this cat litter work well with an auto-cleaning litter box?

This litter is formulated to be a soft wood clumping litter. Please check the specifications of your specific automatic cleaning litter box for guidance on what litters are compatible with it.

Do the "natural clumping agents" in this litter contain any starch such as wheat, corn tapioca, pea or other?

Catalyst uses guar gum as a natural clumping agent. It is added to the exterior of the wood pellets, which also helps with absorbency, clumping, and odor control. When the treated particles get wet or soiled, they form a strong gel network, sticking together and making it easy breezy to scoop the clump.

What are the clumping agents used?

The primary ingredient in all three varieties is clean, upcycled pine softwood. This material is sourced from Catalyst Pet's parent company Lignetics, regional sawmills converting what would have been waste into upcycled litter. No contamination is allowed in the wood: no paint, no stain, or any previously used wood. The wood is captured straight off of a mill, making Catalyst litter super clean and the litter and sawmill very efficient. Healthy Cat and Multi-Cat, in addition to the pine wood, include a natural clumping agent, zeolite, and a mild natural scent. Unscented, in addition to the pine wood, includes a natural clumping agent.

This seems like a weird option for litter, and my bathroom smells like a hardware store when I use it, but it really does a good job. It clumps somewhat, but I wouldn't consider it a clumping litter. I don't sift it, though on occasion I do use a scoop for the poo. My cat frequently prefers to go outside with the dogs so it's not an everyday litter; it's his contingency plan for bad weather days, or when I am too sick to take him outside just to potty. He doesn't fuss too much about it, no more than he does about any other litter. He does still track it and it can be a pain to sweep up. He does like it better mixed with a crystal litter, but I don't know why. I am just the changer of the litter box here. He makes the demands. Lol

I've been trying this litter for the past 30 days. Unfortunately my cats don't like it, in that one who prefers an unused box will occasionally pee in it if their many other boxes have been used, but otherwise they prefer their prior Tidy Cat free and Clear or the other new-to-them Dr Esley's respiratory litter which is also clay but slightly darker and rougher. Personally I like this one's woodsy smell but clearly my cats don't. It does clump well too. But not great that it comes in a plastic bag that I have to take to the grocery store to recycle.

I really wanted to like this litter. Natural, and the price point is great. Unfortunately, I could not breathe when I scooped this litter. It was so dusty or the scent of it...and I had the unscented. It tended to break apart when scooping and made more to scoop. The tracking was horrible and stuck to all the fabric the cats came in contact with. Bummer.

As a person who is very sensitive to artificial fragrances, I always get unscented cat litter. There is no added scent, but the litter itself has a really nice smell, kind of like a lumber department at the hardware store. The litter is nice and soft on my cats paws, and lasts much longer than clay litter before it needs to be changed out entirely. The clumps are not as tight as the clay litter I used previously, which makes scooping take a little more attention to detail. But I think that maybe this is better for the kitties’ health, that it’s less likely to cause any stomach problems from them ingesting some when they take a bath. It tracks some, but less than the Clay litter. We use a litter rug that we got from Chewy, and that picks up the majority from my cats’ paws. I am very happy with this litter and will continue to use it.

I’ve had cats in my life for more than 30 years. Cleaning a cat box is one weird hobby. This stuff is truly a godsend. I don’t know how the elderly manage with clay litter - I barely did. With Catalyst, there is no odor - perhaps a light, freshly cut wood smell when it’s first poured, but definitely not a piney or chemical smell - and no dust. And it doesn’t track. We’ve been living with this litter for 4 months and it just doesn’t! I have a Tux and it doesn’t stick to his paws. It covers poops odor better than anything else I’ve used. And if you’ve seen the metal and wood scoop that Catalyst sells and debated if it’s worth the investment, I debated, too. But once I started using the litter I learned 2 things: it lasts longer than any other litter, so I’m saving money there; and the brilliant properties of these wood shavings really do require a scoop with wide, slippery tines. I invested in the Catalyst scoop - I can’t say it eliminated shaking, but it definitely made a shake more productive; and there’s no way I’m ever going to snap or break that scooper. It’s the most well made scoop on the market. Handling this litter on the way in and out of the box is so much more pleasant because it’s so light. Thank you Thank you team Catalyst! Bonus: I use BeyondGreen cat waste bags; they are strong and compostable, earth friendly material. I feel so much better around the litter box now! Meow!

Had high hopes for this litter. Natural, sustainable, not clay. There is a slight odor to the litter. However, my cat refuses to use the litter. Mixed it with his old litter but that did not help. Don’t understand why he will not use the litter box with this litter. Like the looks of this litter and it’s soft for his paws, so have no clue as to why he’s rejecting it. Have to pawn it off to my daughter who has cats.

I was interested in an alternative to clay litter. My Fur babies were used to the clay. So, I slowly changed one litter box at a time, and low and behold, they took to the New Catalyst litter with NO problems.. This litter is a total game changer !! When cleaning, Pee balls are tight! Poop is just the same, as long as they cover it up. After some time they started covering poops!! Very happy with Catalyst!!

My mom and I both hate the smell of traditional litter, and even other alternative litters. This brand covers the smell of my cat’s urine really well, and overall just smells like pine. The clumping for this litter actually works, unlike other pine litters I’ve tried, making it much easier to clean!

This litter is is incredibly good at odor control. A little goes a long way. If you fill your litterbox to the recommended maximum of 3 inches you'll soon have a box with 4+ inches of litter. This stuff expands as it gets used. I find it better to fill to 2" or less. It does seem to be "quick clumping" as claimed, but the clumps are extremely fragile. You will need to learn to scoop and filter the clumps gently or they will fall apart. It can be frustrating if you're not patient or in a hurry.
