How often should I change out the filter and, can they be rinsed out a couple of times before changing them?

The filter should be replaced every 3-4 weeks or when there are visible signs that the filter is saturated with foreign matter (debris, food, hair, etc.) or if the water flow is impeded. More frequent changes may be necessary due to indoor environmental and water conditions, as well as multiple pet use. The new filter should be rinsed prior to installing.

Does it always have to be plugged in or is this version battery powered? I was thinking about using it for my rabbits but if it has a wire the bunnies will chew through it

This filter is intended for use with the Catit Flower Mini Pet Fountain, which operates with an electrical pump.

What is the filter made out of? Is it charcoal?

They go to a different fountain, but the size & function of it was perfect. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for, these are very flimsy & other than it having a white & black side, I seriously do not think it has the actual charcoal inside like the other brand I buy. It's not one I trust to use alone for my kitties. I did use it laying behind a thoroughly rinsed & cleaned out original filter to perhaps filter anything extra from the older filter. I wouldn't recommend it . If you can't feel the actual charcoal pellets inside, it's not a quality filter.
