Why and what are there meat by products in the canned cat food?

Meat by-products consist of non-rendered, clean internal organ meats (usually cattle and swine). It does not contain hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, or stomach contents except in trace amounts as may unavoidably occur even with good factory practice. It includes but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, & livers. Also, for the liver, it is the liver of cattle, swine, or poultry. When a product has beef in the formula or product description, the liver is beef liver. When beef is not in the formula or product descriptor, the liver is pork or poultry liver. Meat by-products are rich in protein and amino acids to help strengthen and maintain your pet’s muscles. Also, because of their nutrient-rich composition, they are typically the first thing an animal would eat in the wild.

What you are seeing is referred to as Purina’s “Print Letter” and this “Print Letter” is featured on every Purina package. The Print Letter represents a change to the package, formula, or perhaps both and is part of the ingredient deck, which is also featured on every Purina package. This is not an ingredient in Purina products.
