Why and what are there meat by products in the canned cat food?

Originally posted and answered on chewy.com

Meat by-products consist of non-rendered, clean internal organ meats (usually cattle and swine). It does not contain hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, or stomach contents except in trace amounts as may unavoidably occur even with good factory practice. It includes but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, & livers. Also, for the liver, it is the liver of cattle, swine, or poultry. When a product has beef in the formula or product description, the liver is beef liver. When beef is not in the formula or product descriptor, the liver is pork or poultry liver. Meat by-products are rich in protein and amino acids to help strengthen and maintain your pet’s muscles. Also, because of their nutrient-rich composition, they are typically the first thing an animal would eat in the wild.

The Ocean Whitefish recipe contains 94 calories per can, the Turkey Feast recipe contains 95 calories per can, the Salmon Feast recipe contains 90 calories per can, and the Chicken Feast 94 calories per can.

At the end of each nutrition listings there is a code of series of numbers - what do they represent?

What you are seeing is referred to as Purina’s “Print Letter” and this “Print Letter” is featured on every Purina package. The Print Letter represents a change to the package, formula, or perhaps both and is part of the ingredient deck, which is also featured on every Purina package. This is not an ingredient in Purina products.

It all gets eaten

My kittens eat it all up. Their eyes are bright and their coats are shiny. It's been a joy watching them enjoy it all up. One can a day.

We got our kitten from a shelter and were sent home with a some cans of wet food. They recommended Royal Canin for him and that was one of the cans give, as well as vouchers for it but we were also given Fancy Feast. He would not touch the RC but gobbled this up like it a kid eating candy. He still continues to do so 5 months later. He hears the tin opening and comes running no matter where he is or what he’s doing. I’m not sure what we’ll do when it’s time for him to change to adult food!

I’ve been feeding this to my kitten for almost two months the now. She loves it. The ingredients are decent and is budget friendly compared to other brands. I just wish they came in more flavours for kittens like they do for adults or even a 24 pack so I don’t have to keep buying it so often. Other than that, it’s great and she enjoys Fancy Feast!

Cheap for me, tasty for him

I love that this has 2 flavours so my kitten gets some variety. It's super cheap and not awful nutrition-wise, so it's been a good choice for a new pet. Of course

Of course there's better out there, but at least you'll only be out $10 if you don't know what they like yet and they turn their nose up at it! I give him some dry food as well in addition to this.

despite being severely undernourished/weight, thad didn't take to a lot of canned foods. this one, gratefully, he did. unfortunately, bc to his list of ailments we discovered he has hyperthyroidism, we had to remove food with fish content...which is everything (even that labeled as poultry). our other cats are enjoying these meals as treats (we're feeding thad fancy feast gems), but as soon as they've consumed the contents, we're sticking to poultry only for every one of them.

My kitties seem to prefer this, at least until they don’t. Such discerning eaters. They love the creamy texture. The only down side is that there always seems to be a flavor they won’t eat (salmon, in this case), but I am able to pass it on to our local Humane Society. It’s good to try different flavors, though, because the kitties always surprise me.

I've been feeding a stray and found out she gave birth to 7 kittens. I managed to save 6, the other was never found. Mom also has disappeared. First time caring for kittens. To be honest, I bought this food because it was affordable. They seem to love it. They arr able to eat it without any issues. I was worried they'd have some diarrhea coming from nursing to solid food but they are processing it perfectly fine. Im glad I bought them this. When I open the can they come slowly walking because they are still getting use to their new environment. One I walk away they hurry to the dish and eat. Will definitely buy again......until I have to give them to a rescue.
