The sifting slits are approximately 1/6 of an inch (about 4.2 mm) and can work with some types of pellet litter, but it depends on the size and breakdown behavior of the pellets.

Can I use clumping clay litter with this system?

Having the two bottom boxes are nice too, since I can put the sifter box in the last box & empty & clean the box I sifted the shavings into. Great price too & it fits my 16 lb Bombay cat without any problem.

These litter pans work very well. I love the size. The litter sticks to the bottom a little more than the arm and hammer one, also the pans are a little less sturdy then the arm and hammer one but I bought 2 of these because I like the size and the price is good comparatively. Cats have no problem turning around in it and my larger cats have less peeing outside the box accidents. Wish they were made in america.

I use Feline Pine pellets, which relies on you throwing out what sifts through, as the pellets turn into sawdust when liquid (urine) hits it. The sawdust absorbs the urine and holds the urates and allows only the water to evaporate (no odor evaporates, which is genius. Though the slots for sifting aren't ideal for pellets, it still works with a minor modification. Instead of shaking it to sift it, which lets smaller unexpanded bits through, you just gently move the pellets around with a scoop to get the sawdust to go through. To make this work even better, I glued short, 1.5" pieces of PVC tubing to the bottom of the sifting pan with E6000 glue, at each corner and four in the center, to suspend it above the receiving pan. Now when the cats paw at the litter to cover their business, they actually do most of the sifting work! The only thing you still have to scoop out is the poo poo! With the sawdust falling through it also keeps it a bit more contained. And if you use a litter pan liner on the receiving pan, it is effortless. I have six cats, so this was a real game changer!! I will add pictures shortly.

In practice, using a sifting box is messy because you're stacking and unstacking the two "solid" pans constantly. In the case of my high-peeing cat, this meant getting a ton of urine on my hands instead of just using a scooper. If you, like me, have never used a sifting litter box, I'd encourage you to stick to a simpler design. My experience was not good and I went back to a traditional box.
