Where an animal finds this distressful or an owner is unable to comply, the medication can be put in the food, water or milk. My one cat occasionally gets worms. They are never bad to the point of seeing them everywhere but one or two, especially after she's gotten into something (she'll lick gross things like window condensation) or has eaten anything that isn't her regular diet. Out of 9 years, this is probably the third one I have needed and I don't even need it now I got it as a back up in case they come back again; it has been a while. But yeah, this will definitely save you hundreds of dollars. It works quickly and effectively. If it's really bad though, definitely go to the vet.
