How long is this shelf stable for storage?

Answer by ChewyFeb 10, 2025
This food has a shelf life of 18 months. When the package is closed tightly and stored in a cool, dry place, the product will remain fresh and nutritionally balanced until the Best If Used By Date on the package. Ideally, food should be consumed within 5-6 weeks from when opening the bag to ensure freshness. If the product is left out in a bowl for free feeding, we advise to discard at the end of the day and replace with fresh each day. This will help ensure the quality and palatability of our product. Remember, pet food is food. It should be stored in ways that are similar to how human food is stored. Store all pet food in a cool, dry location. It is not recommended to store food in the garage or outside since those locations often lead to insect infestation. It is best to store the food off the floor. When possible, store food in the original bag and within a plastic or metal bin with a lid.

I prefer the grain free Merrick, but I was getting some feedback from the dogs. I don’t know if they changed the formula which is possible so I went to healthy grains and rice! They seem to like it fine! But I am wondering if the grain free wasn’t better for them it’s so hard to judge anymore the healthiest thing to do for your dogs! I was a little upset that when I inquired with Merrick directly, they were not very specific!

My dog helps me w my illness. I need her to be her best as a German Shepherd. She’s a picky eater and when I saw this food w grains and fruits no soy potatoes or junk I knew she would love it. She is a perfect weight I cut the protein by adding a little canned food “ beyond “ . If a dog is not working really hard and older (6) they don’t need high protein. So now she loves her food at 90 pounds and not fat she’s perfect. I will be getting this again and again.

I’m not sure why but something seems to be different with this food. I have been feeding my dogs this for several years with no problems but within the past six months, all four of my dogs have either started refusing to eat it or it’s given them horrible diarrhea. I don’t know what has changed, but needless to say I will not be purchasing this again. We will need to switch to something else.

We have a large pack of dogs of all ages, breeds & sizes. I switched to Merrick Chicken with Ancient Grains after reading studies about how kibble with corn, soy, wheat & beets has been linked to health issues in pets due to the high amount of Glyphosate from spraying those crops with pesticides. We have only been using the food for a couple weeks, but happy to say even my picky eaters love it & we have not had any digestion or intestinal issues while switching foods.
