Yes, these extensions work with the steel gate with decorative wood gate.

For the 29 in tall MidWest gate how many extensions can be used? I need to cover 53 inches for Aussies.

For firm and sturdy assembly, using 1 set of extensions per pet gate is suggested.

The space of the opening that I want to gate is 39 1/2"W. Do I need to purchase only one extension for the 29"H gate?

The MidWest Steel Pet Gate expands from 29.5 to 38 inches wide, on it's own. To span 39-1/2 inches wide a single, 3 inch extension is needed.

Easy to install. Note that only one extension is supposed to be installed per side (including the 3" extension provided with the gate). However, it IS possible to install 2 on one side, but the gate will not be as rigid. I successfully used an 11" extension on one side and the 2 provided 3" extensions on the other. I did not find the gate hard to open as others have commented. But it is (by design) a 2 handed operation that is not trivial. I found the auto-close feature to be helpful. The gate can be kept in the open position by manually moving it close to the closed position.
