How is the dog food produced? Is it baked or airdried?

This kibble is extruded. Extrusion is a process similar to a steam cooker that has been used to prepare dry pet foods for over half a century. The finely ground mixture of ingredients is pushed by a screw under pressure and passed through a die (a small kibble-shaped cutout), which gives the product its final appearance. Steam is injected during this process like a pressure cooker. This form of manufacturing has the additional benefit in that it sterilizes pathogenic organisms.

What is the natural flavor made from?

The Natural Vegetable Flavor is 100% free of any animal-sourced ingredients, and has a higher acceptance compared to animal-based flavors. However, information regarding specific components of Natural Balance's natural flavor is considered proprietary to their recipe.

What is the highest allowable mercury level in this dog food?

Answer by ChewyApr 08, 2025
The highest level allowed is not currently available. Natural Balance asks its suppliers to have a heavy metal monitoring program in place. This brand monitors through a Certificate of Analysis (COA) as the ingredients must also meet the brand's own stringent quality assurance and specification standards. Further, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that all animal foods, like human foods, be safe to eat, be produced under sanitary conditions, contain no harmful substances, and be truthfully labeled.

After suffering with allergies for some time now, we decided to change her food to a limited ingredient- grain free option. We wanted something with the fish for the omega 3 and remove chicken altogether, along with barley. We slowly introduced with her old food, and then fully converted. She likes it, it has not caused any digestive issues, and its healthy kibble. We've tried those "human grade" food brands, and they wreaked havoc on her stomach. For now, this will do, as we've also noticed a decrease in her scratching, and her coat is looking better. We're satisfied.

Was searching for a more natural dog food for my dog. After much research, I chose to invest into this brand. Today, I was feeding my dog and found a white piece baked into the kibble. I removed it, couldn’t figure out what if it was something that was soft for consumption. I decided to chew on the white piece, because if I expect my own dog to eat this, I should also be able to eat thing or at least break it down with my teeth? It did not break when I chomped down on my back molars. Was it a bone? Was it plastic?

We switched to this food last year. Didn't think anything of the food when our dog started having seizures a couple weeks later. He went on medication then they got worse in August. We realized in November that rosemary extract can cause seizures in dogs!! I called the company and found out they actually changed their formula over the summer, which is probably why he started having more seizures in August! We cut out this food and all other products that contain rosemary and the seizures stopped!

We are starting to give something else. We used to give her Hill's Science Diet Salmon for Skin and Stomach, but, Hill's Science Diet changed the formula to Pollack and Fly Insect Protein and she didn't and I didn't care for the change. Why did Hill's Science Diet change? She liked the Salmon version for years. Now they only have Salmon for Puppies and Ages 1-6. ???

The new bag (same dry food as always) I ordered (he and his mom visit us in Carson City, NV for holidays etc.) had dry food that looked slightly darker than the previous ones. Grover does not love the food. He will eventually eat it, but I wonder if you made a change of some sort in the composition. I can't explain why he is not eager for it and it is slightly darker in color.

If your dog didn’t have issues with pooping too much, this dog food has you covered. Even with the same volume of food that he used to eat of the “duck and potato” formula, my dog has gone from pooping just once a day to three times if not four times. This isn’t even a joke anymore I have no idea where all this poop is coming from it’s like what it was before just 4 times more. He’s a good, well-trained, housebroken dog too, and I’ve come home to him pooping in the house since he can’t hold it with how much he needs to go all of the time. So very odd, will be switching back to duck and potato, hopefully that formula hasn’t changed.
