The difficulty level of this puzzle is level 2, or intermediate.

Is there a way to take this apart for a thorough cleaning?

It is a big fat problem that you can’t take this apart. Food is stuck inside, so trying to clean it with water will leave you with wet gross food inside.

Are these easy enough to slide/open that a rat could do it?

I've had pet rats and most of them would love this toy! in fact, they would probably figure it out faster than many cats (no offense to cats) You'd need to supervise because they could hurt themselves if they chewed the hard plastic but otherwise would be wonderful enrichment for your rats.

Can you use this with reg cat food

Regular dry cat food can be used with this toy, this puzzle can actually hold up to ¼ cup of food.

I love Nina Ottosson's treat puzzles, my cat is incredibly smart and food motivated so food puzzles have always been a huge hit for her. However, this one is just not for us. I bought it because the board is kind of tent-shaped, and I thought the slant would add an extra challenge to the ladybug puzzle which is pretty much the same premise. However, the slant is not enough to make the covers or pegs close by themselves. The slant also requires that the little bowls be at a slant, and the issue is that my cat can not fit her nose into them to get the treats out. She can figure out the sliding and uncovering mechanisms, but she just can't reach the treats and gets frustrated. This board would probably be best for smaller or more nimble cats who are either more physically capable of getting the treats, or enthusiastic enough to keep trying to get them without getting frustrated.

Yes, they walked over to the puzzle, quickly figured out how to get at the food, but they looked just plain bored. No excitement, no play. Maybe I should fill the puzzle with catnip?

When my cat pawed the food out it went into the channels where the pots slide up and down. Took me a couple of days to realize the food either ended up INSIDE the toy or under it but my cat didn't get much if any of it. The sliders n leaves were too loose and being on an angle there was no way for my cat to use 2 paws to hold it up and eat at same time. I even had trouble putting treats in it to start with. Not sure if mine was defective or just poor design but I very much recommend against this product!!

This one is a little harder than the other puzzles we previously had, it took my cat a few times to figure out how to get the treats. He now prefers this puzzle over his old ones! It still takes him a bit to get the treats out, which is nice because his other puzzle he could solve in a minute. Definitely recommend if your animal has experience with puzzles!! Maybe not as a beginner puzzle though.

At first use my kitty did not seem interested in it(she did sniff it) when I left it out for her. So I put it away for awhile. Brought it out again(about 6-8 weeks ago), and when she’s hungry she tried it more, some success, now she’s at full success at maneuvering all the gadgets. What I decided to do, was to give half her food dose(morning and evening) in her regular bowl(with warm water only), and put the other half into all those little ‘cups’ and cover them with with the green cover(mostly at first), then the seed covers too. Now she’s a pro at all the different gadgets hiding her ‘nibble’ food(2nd half of each meal). Sometimes she goes through it fast, other times she eats from it more slowly(grazing). She’s getting soooo good at it, I’m about to really try letting her use my dog’s Snuffle Mat. I actually already did, a short bit, by accident,(she discovered the smell of our dog’s kibble in there)before Sam got to it. She loves his food too! But Sam was waiting, with ‘baited breaths’ and whines heehee, so I had to pull Poppy away. One of these days coming up, I will let her try Sam’s Snuffle Mat. :) Then I’ll need to get a new one for her. She’s so used to the 2 that are hers.

The product itself is great, it does not seem too difficult for a cat to use and figure out, sadly mine weren’t interested!

Meh.

Because of tilt, hard for cat to keep some slots open long enough to get treat. Some of moving covers too tight for cat to slide.
