Can I give this 4 hours after a meal instead of 1 hour before a meal?

The supplement should be given on an empty stomach, at least one hour before a meal for optimal absorption. Four hours before a meal would work.

What's the difference between the coated and the chewable tablets?

Answer by ChewySep 24, 2025
Both the coated and the chewable tablets contain the same combination of S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and Silybin-Phosphatidylcholine Complex (SPC). However, the coated tablets, which come in three sizes and are unflavored should be given whole, while the hydrolyzed chicken flavored chewable tablets, which come in one size, can be split for individual administration.

This chewable version is so much easier to use than the other type of pill (capsule). Buried in Braunschweiger it becomes a treat (it is bitter so needs something to disguise the taste according to the package - they suggest liver paste). Needs taken on an empty stomach - an hour before a meal or 2 hours after according to package.

These pills are marketed as chewables but for a picky dog who won’t take pills, they aren’t appetizing enough to be chewed. Very large, crumbly, no scent though apparently they are liver- flavored. I’m better off with the regular pills and trying to mask it in a small amount of food for the amount of effort it takes to try to get these monsters down.

My dog has taken a variety of medications, including steroids, for several years due to an autoimmune disease and has high liver numbers. My vet specialist suggested giving her Denamarin. She’s doing very well and the vet credits Denamarin as contributing to her health.

My dog's liver enzymes were high and taking this brought her numbers down dramatically. She didn't like the taste. So I crushed the pill and mixed it with a small amount of wet cat food. It's hard to give my dog pills because she smells the medication and refuses to take it regardless of what I put the pill in. I felt like I was running out of ways to give her meds. Wet cat food works great! I know the bottle says to give on an empty stomach, but it still brought her numbers down. And it was my vet who used the word "dramatically."
