Will Nyjer seed fall through this?

Originally posted and answered on chewy.com
Answer by ChewyJul 15, 2025
Due to the small size of Nyjer seeds, they may fall through the openings of this feeder. This feeder is designed primarily to hold larger seeds, such as black oil sunflower seeds. It holds approximately 1.12 lb of black oil sunflower seed. We recommend using a feeder specifically designed for smaller seeds to ensure the best experience for both the birds and the user.

Can you use regular wild bird seed in it ?

I have had one of these feeders in the past. I prefer sunflower chips to the black oil sunflower seeds and it worked well. Fewer rogue sunflowers growing beneath the feeder that way too.

I've gone thru several of these due to the neighborhood bear stealing them. Other than that they are inexpensive and hold a LOT of oilers. Good for smaller birds but when it gets about halfway empty the finches & sparrows have a difficult time hanging on to the lower half. Chickadees & titmice seem nonplussed & just hang upside down. Bear thinks its a toy. Use this at home and also work because its economical, functional & unique.

The top is supposed to slide to the side but mine won't move enough to get any seeds into the ball. Not worth buying.

Bought this to add more options for putting out seeds that the squirrels don't find easy to access. Purchased a baffle for above it to keep the seed dry. I have another more traditional feeder on the other side of the yard. This one doesn't get much interest from the local bird community. The traditional feeder is filled daily and empty before sundown. This one has been up for weeks. Have actually never seen a bird on it and very few seeds are taken, though there is debris below it, so something is visiting from time to time.

It did not take our birds long to find this bird feeder which we placed on the opposite side of the house from our other feeders. They flocked to it and eat from all sides of it. Sometimes three birds at one time. Others waiting from a distance.
