Is there a way to keep the lids closed for storage?

This feeder features tamper resistant lids that prevent your pets from sneaking an early meal. It is only recommended to put enough food for mealtime in the feeder. 

Does the feeder door close after a certain amount of time or stay open? If the former, can I control when it closes?

The lid will not automatically close. For example, if it is 8 a.m. and you set the first dial to 4 and the second dial to between 9 and 10, the first lid will open at 12 p.m. and the second lid will open at 5:30 p.m.

Does this feeder start automatically when you turn the dial? How do I know that it is working?

This feeder does not have an explicit "on/off" feature, so the feeder is still technically powered on even when the timers reach zero. The only way to completely power off the unit is to remove the battery. To set the feeder timers, turn each dial until the arrow on the feeder points to the number of hours between now and when you want your pet to be fed. (You can set it up to 24 hours in advance, in 1/2-hour increments.) You will not hear any ticking noise as the dial timer counts down. As a test, set the dial to the lowest setting of 2, which will be about 2 hours, and then come back to see if the feeder has opened.

Is there an option to plug it into an outlet to avoid the battery death issue?

This feeder only runs on batteries.

I loved this feeder. Today it stopped after 1 1/2 years. Changing the battery did not make a difference. Nothing out there that is similar. My cat can hear the door open and runs for his meal. I use it for a 5am dinner and a 2pm snack. Then set it us for 5pm and 9pm after he has his 5am meal. It work well when I travel too. as the sitter doesn't have to come in many times to feed the cat. I will get another one. But first I will try a new battery

I have so far used it successfully every morning. It allows me to feed the first morning meal dispensed to my cat at 5 am somas to avoid being woken up too early

I have so far used it successfully every morning. It allows me to feed the first morning meal dispensed to my cat at 5 am somas to avoid being woken up too early. I normally fill one box with 1/5 cup of dry food and close it, later putting in the battery and setting it for 7-8 hours. Each morning the flap is open and the food gone. It is a cheap to buy food dispenser and works well for two pre-timed meals.

Very happy with this purchase. What I like about this model is that it tells you on the box/instructions, that each notch in the dial is 30 minutes. I tried one from another store and ended up retiring it because I had no idea how long each notch was and the numbers were very hard to read. This one has great instructions -- the one I returned did not. The price is great and it's easy to read the numbers. I found that it was off by about 20 minutes, but that now that I know I will just set it by one less notch.

I've been waiting for the battery I put in this when I first bought it to run out of juice so I could write this review... About 9 months ago it dawn on me that I hadn't yet had to replace the battery on this since I bought it. ...and at THAT point it had been a while, which is what made me consider that question. The battery died this week and I came here to see when I had actually bought it. That was part of the set up for me; I decided to wait until it ran out and then be freshly surprised when I checked its actual longevity on my Order History here. I bought it in August 2023. The battery lasted a few weeks shy of two years. Great product. No complaints.

This is a budget friendly solution for someone who maybe doesn't need an automatic feeder all the time. The only problem I've found is that the feeder doesn't have much weight to it; since I give my cats a rather small portion of dry food in each bowl, they were pushing the feeders all over and messing with them because they can smell the food waiting. I haven't figured out how to solve this problem.
