how often does it need to be cleaned

It is recommended to clean this fountain regularly, depending on the amount of pets using it. Replace the carbon filter every 2-4 weeks and replace the foam filter every 1-2 months. When it is time to clean the fountain, simply disassemble it and place it in the top rack of the dishwasher. Just make sure you hand wash the pump separately.

It is best to use both the foam filter and carbon filter. Its best to use the replacement filters made by Drinkwell to ensure proper fitting and filtering.

Is it battery operated?

The fountain will include an AC power adapter and needs access to a standard electrical outlet. It is not battery-powered.

Why does black stuff, like from the filter, spread through, making the water get black?

These small black particles are caused by excess charcoal dust in the filter. Though this dust is in no way harmful for your pets if they drink the water, it does have the potential to leave residue in the bowl. Before placing each filter in the fountain, it’s a good idea to run it under cold water for around a minute to rinse out any excessive charcoal dust.

The only bummer is I bought this fountain specifically for the butterfly part and the butterfly scares her to death so I can’t use it that part.

We had it going on three years and i got a new one. If i had read the part where you could get replacement parts i wouldnt have had to get a new one They are really very sturdy.
