The filters are packaged in quantities of four, containing (2) 2-packs.

Are these filters supposed to take hours to try & get them to rinse clear?

It is normal to see dust with these types of filters. Often, when replacement filters are in transit, they can shift and cause the internal carbon to shed. To help with this issue, it is recommended to run the filter underwater, before installing them in the fountain. This will not hinder the functionality of the filter and will eliminate loose particles inside.

Is it possible to replace the plastic case this filter goes into? I accidentally destroyed mine, and don't see them for sale.

The charcoal filters are designed to remove bad tastes and odors, and should not cause the water to smell unusual. Please know that we do recommend to rinse the charcoal filters thoroughly before placing them within their pet’s fountain. If you are experiencing any smells, we would strongly recommend that you clean your pet’s fountain and pump.

In the past, I have ordered generic filters for our PetSafe fountain. They were inconsistent and I stopped using them when a fine white grit started showing up in the water. I’m glad to say that these seem to be of a much higher quality. They also fit the housing better.

The quality of these filters gets worse with each order. Flimsy manufacturing. They get slimy very quickly and need to be replaced weekly to keep the water in the fountains clean. The purchase price seems to be increasing every time I order them. PetSafe has a great product with the cat water fountains. They really should find a different source for the manufacture of this component.
