can I use a clumping litter?

It is recommended that you do not use any type of clay litter, natural litters, or any other crystal litter and do not use any other tray; only use PetSafe ScoopFree products. If you use clumping litter, you run the risk of it clumping or caking on the rake.

What other letter can I use with this litter box?

This litter box was designed for use with PetSafe ScoopFree litter only. Use of other types of litters can significantly decrease performance and risk damaging the litter box.

What reusable steel tray works with this? And why does it have to be the same brand?

1000% worth the investment

I've been dealing with the old school box with "lightweight clay litter" for years. It would smell SO quickly, no matter how much time I'd spend cleaning and scooping each week. I was recommended to this particular litter box by a friend - as I was looking at the large circle ones, but my cats aren't used to going into a box... it's always been open on top. I didn't want to spend so much and then they wouldn't go in. PLUS, my friend sent me to articles on how they have harmed some cats who got stuck in them (no thanks). Anywho... while this was NOT a CHEAP litter box... it has made a WORLD of difference in our house! The cats (2 brothers) got on board quickly. They used to poop outside the box if it wasn't cleaned at exactly the right time - and they haven't done that since, because IT'S ALWAYS CLEAN! I slowly moved them to this box so they'd be good with it. I started adding the crystal litter in to their regular box, until eventually it was all the new litter. Once they were good with that, I switched out the box. They are happy, we are happy, and my boyfriend commented today, "That new system you've got going on seems to be working really well. I haven't smelled the litter since you set it up." #WIN! 100% worth the investment. No more ammonia smell. It's like the crystals just whisk it away, and I don't have to worry about scooping, because the box does it for me! I just take the scooped bits away and carry on. I have two cats, and I took 30 seconds to get rid of the waste after a week - and most likely could have left it longer. Highly recommend. I love my cats. But I've always hated the litter routine. This is a new world of cat bathrooms.

First machine I owned lasted me almost 2 years, which I felt was adequate. Bought another, that last me 8 months. Figured I received one not built so well, not a big deal. Bought a third, it lasted me 2 months. On to another company. The problem with the last 2, the rake would lose its bearings and get stuck in the middle, and on comes the dreaded red light. I cleaned the sensors, and took the box apart to see if anything was clogged. Nothing.

My cat is very picky about his litter, I thought having an automatic box would make things cleaner for him but the crystals don't dry thoroughly and after 4 or 5 days the wet crystals start to stick to the bottom of the pan. At that point, he rejects the box and goes elsewhere. I even tried cleaning the tray nightly, and mixing the crystals around so they don't saturate in one spot but it still only has a lifespan of a few days before it's too dirty for him.

Great if your cats aren’t scared

After months of our two cats starting to use it, something spooked them and they quit. I wish we could use this but we are back to a plain old litter box

It’s a great litter box. It’s quiet and cleans itself really well. My cat just didn’t like the crystal litter because he’s a little prince. I will say that if your cat likes to pee in the same spot every time then you will need to stir the litter around every day or two so it doesn’t all clump together in one spot.

Cats won’t use it

My cats would use this when I had two litter boxes but when I took the regular clay litter box away they won’t use this one now.
