What is the shelf life of an unopened bag of this dog food?

Answer by OldPetstoreEmployeeAug 14, 2025
They say you should finish a bag of dry dog food within 30 days/ a month. Buying bags to last longer end up going off after about that point especially if you transfer food out of the bag and don't clean the new containers well. Dog food had lots of good oils in it for coats and joint health omega-3 and that is what ends up going rancid over time.

What is happening? My dog has been on this food for a while. Or a variation of it at least. I recently switched to this flavor because I thought the other one was causing itchy skin. But this once is doing the same thing. There no fleas. There can’t be. And I’ve checked. Plus, the house is treated, the lawn is treated. Both dogs are treated monthly, given baths routinely, have flea collars on, etc. I’ve checked them obsessively. It’s the food. Has to be. It was fine for a long time. And then something changed. I don’t know what. But this is going to cause a lot of money at the vet to fix. And now what do I feed?

After our senior guy had (yet another) streak of tummy trouble, we finally decided to switch to an "easier" food. He likes it and hasn't had any issues since starting it. Since the kibble also has probiotics, we are going to dial back his (expensive) probiotic supplements, which is a bonus.

My dog has just started on the sensitive tummy and skin food, so it’ll take a little bit of time to make sure that it’s gonna cure the allergy issue but so far so good. Same brand of food she’s been on her whole life just switched from the chicken to lamb so far she’s not been chewing on her feet are showing any signs of itchiness.

My fur king Tuxedo has been on Purina pro plan for a few years now. This is a hard kibble I use in addition to cooking for him. I add in a cup full of hard food to his food. 10 of 10 I recommend. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because tux is a smaller Adult dog. I wish Purina carried the ADULT smaller Kibble in ALL flavor (Sensitive Stomach)

This food is supposed to be good for sensitive stomach but it made both of my dogs have stomach issues. They weren’t using the bathroom as well, constipation. One of them became very itchy. We have switched back to our previous food. Within a week of going back to our old food they stopped scratching and the constipation was relieved.

I transitioned my dogs to this against my wants because the internet raved over the pro plan foods. I am not a fan of the brand BUT it had real great reviews and backed by vets. Previously my dogs were on a raw diet for about 5 years. I switched because my local butcher’s food quality seemed to get worse and my dogs were feeling it (I live in a big city). So back to kibble I go and THIS food immediately gave my dogs firm poops. I was so happy. My senior dog that’s picky needs a little broth added to eat it but my younger dog eats it all up. Never thought I’d ever leave a positive review for a big box brand like this one but the proof is in the kibble.

Thought this was going to be great for my pups small size kibble and fit the need for my dog with allergies, and although I slowly transitioned as by my vet said by day three with giving less than a quarter cup, it gave him diarrhea. I’m sure that wouldn’t happen to every dog, but obviously mine did not tolerate it.
