It's a reaction of two of the minerals, sulfur and copper, that react in high heat during the canning process. The heat during the canning process is to ensure the meat is safe to eat, and during this process, the sulfur and copper react which creates black specks.

My 18-year-old boy cat turns up his nose at almost all wet food. But this he likes -- at least, he likes to lick the gravy off the chunks! He'll it a few of the meaty bits too, and then the girl cat Hoovers it up after him. :-D We went through dozens of brands and flavors to find something he liked. It was a relief to find this one, and bonus that Chewy carries it.

My sick old cat likes this food.

She likes it, both texture and flavor. I wish it was lower in protein.

The small cans are inconsistent, sometimes fresh and chunky, and sometimes mushy with thick gravy. Of course finicky eaters will know the difference. And in an effort to get some consistency, I just bought the large cans for the first time, and my cats won’t touch it at all. WHY is the formula different across the board??? It makes no sense. This has happened before with this brand of Wellness, where the recipe in the 3oz is different (and preferred, and of course, more expensive) than the recipe in the 5.5oz. Ridiculous.

Likes this food.

Most of the time my cat, Marvin, enjoys his Wellness food but sometimes he gets a bit finicky but not often. He starts eating again when he gets hungry.

It's a hit!

Tilly is particular about food, so I'm glad to find that she loves this one. It seems to have just the right mix of manageable-sized meat chunks and gravy.

I was happy with this brand of food before. I usually buy this Sliced Chicken Dinner flavor and Minced Salmon . However in a matter of 13 days the cat vomited 2x. While this may not be a lot I am not used to seeing him throw up. Other reviewers mentioned the food changing. Did this really happen ? I am now afraid to buy this. The cans are not expired and they did not sit out in the sun .

I have 3 cats and none of them liked this food! I didn’t like the looks of it myself. Pieces are much too big and actually had to mash it with a fork!
