We have found that the smoothest transition from one dog food to another is to mix the foods together. When changing to CANIDAE some dogs may do better by making a gradual transition over 7 - 10 days. Start with 25% of the new food mixed with 75% of the previous diet and gradually increase the new while decreasing the previous until the transition is complete

About CANIDAE
CANIDAE originated out of a Southern California feed store in 1996. It was and still is independent and family-owned. They have their own Kansas farm as well as a Texas cooking facility. When they created CANIDAE, their goal was to make pet food that made a difference for both pets and pet parents. Their original commitment and passion for making high-quality pet food is still just as strong today.

Got my girl back in Shape
By LC89 on Feb 2, 2021
My girl got a little chunky on some other brands of dog food, so I did some research on good quality ingredients in dog food brands and switched to Canidae. I started to notice a difference a few months after starting her on the regular stuff, but then winter hit and we had to limit our outdoor playtime and runs, so I switched her over to the less active version for the colder months, and she's loving it. She's getting back in shape, and has more energy and interest in playing again. It feels really good to have such a happy and healthy dog.

Last two bags full of dust
By Texas409 on Jan 13, 2021
To Canidae. Something changed. The last two bags of Canidae All Life Stages Less Active were full of dust. Looked liked ground up Kibble, maybe. At this price point I expect better quality control. My dog had trouble eating it and her stools are very soft now and look like there is undigested matter in them. I am changing brands.

Dusty and inedible
By kc0206 on Nov 7, 2020
This does not reflect on Chewy at all, they delivered this food on time and have been great. However, in terms of the actual food, I have been a loyal Canidae customer for years, my dogs have enjoyed it and done well on it, and this bag smelled unappetizing, was full of dust, and my dogs had very little interest in eating it. They typically have great appetites, so I immediately thought something was wrong. After talking with my vet and buying some Science Diet on the next round, my dogs are more than happy to eat it and are doing great. Canidae must have changed their formula or is having a quality control issue, because my decidedly “un-picky” dogs wanted nothing to do with this bag of food This does not reflect on Chewy at all, they delivered this food on time and have been great. Order mixed up
By Nette on Dec 4, 2020
When I go in to make changes to my auto shipment, things get mixed up. I called to correct but still mixed up. I wanted one bag of dog food with some treats.... ended up with two bags of dog food shipped on different days and no treats. It’s ok because I will use the dog food and I love Chewy and it’s a busy time of year.

This is grain free
By Samson on Jan 17, 2021
It is not clear on the description, but it is grain free. Samson's vet strongly recommended staying away from the grain free products. That is the only reason I don't recommend it.

So far so good but...
By Rebecca on Oct 15, 2020 Top 500 Contributor
My dog has gained a bit of weight and our vet suggested I find a food that is wayyy lower in fat. I pretty much looked at all the foods on Chewy that's NOT grain-free and this one seem to hit the lower protein and low fat % and good ingredient category. It's been about a week and so far no upset stomach, no loose stool. Like others have mentioned, He does go poo about one to two times more but he's stool looks good and doesn't smell as much! On a side note, the chewy box came all dented and almost open but the dog food bag itself was ok. I wish they didn't put bone stock in with this box... it dented the bone broth and it exploded. As much as I want to save the environment and use less boxes My dog has gained a bit of weight and our vet suggested I find a food that is wayyy lower in fat. Of course Chewy did everything right and sent a new box of bone broth after I sent them photos, so A+++ for customer service as usual :) … more

Something changed
By EmmasMom on Nov 14, 2020
Something has changed with this formula. I ordered 4 bags in a short time that were on sale two for one and the first one was fine. The second one was much lighter in color and shaped differently. It's been giving my girl terrible gas and loose stools. I'll have to chalk it up and toss the rest of it and go back to her old food I'm sorry to say.

CANIDAE DOG FOOD
By HouseRN on Oct 27, 2020
I tried CANIDA for my older Britt who does have a weight issue, Rusty loves it! I noticed my Chihuahua would steal any kibbles Rusty may have missed during meal time (Rusty is blind) so I added the CANIDAE to my Chi's diet and he scarfed it right down. I then tried it with my other dogs, and all love the food. I have ordered the 30# bag and will feed all my fur babies this food. All my dogs are 8+ years old and don't run around as much as they use to.

By Manda on Jan 17, 2021
Last 2 or so bags have had so much dust/crumbles. It’s getting worse with each new bag. I will be switching to something else.

unsolved issue
By Eileen on Sep 16, 2020
My dog has been on this brand and formula since age 1 due to hip displasia that he was born with. He is now 8. I'm very familiar with the size and color of this kibble and in the last three 30 lb bags it has drastically changed from a dark, rich color to a much lighter not so healthy looking kibble. The size is larger too. Because of that drastic change I am not sure what I'm feeding my dog now. I'm not confident it's the same food and will now have to find another senior, less active food and transition him, which is unfortunate since he's 8 and already has enough hip and digestive issues. Since he has eaten the lighter kibble his stools are not firm but very soft. I've spoken with the Canidae company twice in the last week and they tell me the formula has not changed and that sometimes the color may vary due to certain ingredients. Odd that in the last 7 years that has never happened. I was once very happy with this dog food and am now very disappointed and frustrated. My concern is with this brand of dog food not with Chewy. … more
