Senior and less active dogs may be fed a reduced amount, depending on the dog's weight and activity level. Grain free diets may not be suitable for all dogs. If you have any dietary concerns, please consult with your veterinarian.
The Daily Feeding Guidelines are a good starting point on the amount of food to be fed on a daily basis. Individual pets may require more or less food. Always provide plenty of fresh water.
When changing to CANIDAE® Grain Free PURE Ancestral™ Red Meat Formula, some dogs may do better by making a gradual transition over 7-10 days. Start with 25% of the new food mixed with 75% of the previous diet and gradually increase the new while decreasing the previous until the transition is complete.
CANIDAE® Grain Free PURE Ancestral™ Red Meat Formula is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance.

Meals That Prioritize Protein
Full of the rich animal protein your dog needs, CANIDAE Grain Free PURE Ancestral formulas are always made with ample amounts of fish, poultry, game or red meat, then coated with freeze-dried raw protein for added flavor. Each 20-pound bag contains up to 17 pounds of animal protein, rounded with whole vegetables. The result is a meal that is similar to what your dog's ancestors ate and thrived on.
Raw Coated to Tempt Every Pup
Savory pieces of kibble become even more delicious when they're coated with raw meat, fish or poultry. Freeze-dried for optimal flavor and texture, a burst of raw adds a little something special into every bite. Not only does it enhance the protein in your pup's meal, but few dogs can resist the delicious aroma and flavor of raw—so you can entice even your pickiest pal.

Packed with Protein to Feed Their Instincts
With a variety of regionally sourced proteins in every complete and balanced formula, CANIDAE Grain Free PURE Ancestral formulas feeds your dog's natural instincts with every bowl. Real animal protein nourishes their muscles and fuels their boundless energy, so you know your active pup is getting the nutrition he needs and the flavors he craves.
Regionally Sourced Ingredients You Can Trust
Each formula is made with a variety of ranch-raised, farm-raised, fresh or wild-caught ingredients, to create wholesome, responsibly raised meals your dog will love. Vegetables, legumes and herbs are locally sourced, too, which means your dog's bowl will always be packed with sustainable nutrition you can be proud to serve.

Excellent dog treats.
By Grateful on Dec 12, 2020
This is really good food. Dogs and cats love it. We cannot afford a steady diet of it for them but if you consider the cost of dog treats, this food is excellent for dog treats and then it is not quite so expensive. We usually purchase it when it is on sale.

Food trial
By Carmen on Dec 7, 2020
I purchased 3 different foods to find a replacement for our dogs current kibble. This seemed to be high quality, but the dogs didn’t really care for it. Moving on to something else.

We love our Canidae
By Booboo on Dec 11, 2020
Very pleased with quality of the Canidae Ancestral foods, including the Red Meat formula freeze-dried raw coated dog food. I have been feeding the Canidae foods for many years and never disappointed in condition of pups and overall health.

Amazing food!
By Kelpieapproved on Sep 12, 2020
I've been using this dog food for over a year and my boy loves it compared to the canidae grain free real duck one . He has always been a picky eater as well as he’s had a few gut issues but I’ve really seen that this food is amazing for him as well as his coat.

By PupMom on Oct 15, 2020
We switched our GSD’s food but returned to Canidae because it is so good for his digestive tract. His poop is perfect.

Negative formula change
By TwoRussells on May 14, 2020
Went thru several bags with positive results. NOW in May 2020 the formula is reduced to the 1st 3 ingredients from meat, previously was 5. Replaced by increased lentils, potato and pea protein. Negative formula transition execution, and VERY disappointing change by Canidae. Thanks again to Chewy for keeping customers informed of formula changes to facilitate informed decisions.! Staying with Chewy, for sure but; moving on from Canidae...

Cheapened, new formula
By 2BigHungryDogs on May 6, 2020
Couldn't buy this since Sept. 2019, now in May 2020 the formula is reduced to the 1st 3 ingredients from meat, previously was 5. Replaced by increased lentils, potato (filler) and pea protein. Of course no price drop. Lousy formula transition execution, and disappointing cheapening of the product. Canidae is no longer worthy for my dog.

Great for my dogs food allergies
By Gloria on Nov 30, 2019
I have 4 dogs 2 of which have food sensitivities. This is the only food they can eat. I hate paying the price but my dogs are not scratching and dont have a skin issues on it. The only problem right now is that there seems to be an issue with it not being in stock. Which is bad when it is the only thing 2 of your dogs can eat

Dogs didn't care for
By meme on Sep 10, 2019
We've had our dogs on Canidae for a few years now but we recently found out they both have food allergies and this was the only Canidae they could both eat. However, they do not care for this food. We would have to bribe them with yogurt or cheese placed on top and even then they would barely eat the food. We finally just went back to the chicken and lentil food and are currently trying to find another food they can both eat. We were also recently informed that studies have shown dogs shouldn't be on grain free food as it has been linked to cardiac issue. I haven't had time to research it out but just food for thought for those that have had their dog on grain free, like we have, or are We've had our dogs on Canidae for a few years now but we recently found out they both have food allergies and this was the only Canidae they could both eat.
